Re: Why Have Pointers Lost Their Status
Thanks RayG, that was well said. I was on my own when I decided I wanted to hunt quail behind a dog. I didn't know anything about dogs nor did I know anybody who hunted with dogs. I remember seeing a picture of a Pointer and thinking that is the dog I want. Unfortunately, I didn't know any breeders ...

Why Have Pointers Lost Their Status
So I posted a topic on wither to spay or not spay. A couple of responses indicated English Pointers do not command the money they used to, or I guess you could say as popular. So my question, what if anything, has happened to the Pointer? I thought at one time they were THE possibly along with sette...

Re: Spay or Not to Spay
Thanks guy's I appreciate the information as it is very helpful. I do plan on putting a top on the kennel as I know a persistent dog would be able to jump/climb over if he really wanted to. As I mentioned, I am not really looking into becoming a breeder. I think I would breed to get another dog out ...

I am posing this question to see what others think and get some input. I have two EP, a male about 2 years old and a female about 5 months, and they both come from pretty good blood lines. I am trying to decide if I should spay the female as I am on the fence if I want to breed her. For the record I...

Re: Use a Muzzle During Dog Intro
So out of curiosity is it common to see this type of behavior out of dogs who have lived all of their lives in a kennel? I know they are around other dogs but if the only socialization they get is with wire between the two, then to me they really cannot socialize. The most dogs I have had at one tim...

I appreciate everyone’s advice and I truly respect it. I was thinking I was getting a good dog from a reliable breeder and maybe he was at some time, but he acts like an abused dog. The last week has been spent on bonding. He doesn’t seem to like treats that much until I finally decided to try cooke...

Just curious how many of your have dogs that like to chase reptiles such as lizards. Do you think it can cause any problems when it comes to working birds? I assume lizards/reptiles have a scent that is attractive to dogs. My concern is the dogs sniff the ground to find them. What are your thoughts?

I was out hunting scaled quail today and when my dog would go on point I would look out and about 20 yards I would see the whole covey running. I have found a few covies with decent numbers of birds, but they are few, and far between. You really have to get out and wear out some leather to find them. I have only hunted the covies once and only shot about 1 or 2 birds out of them. The numbers last year were low, and are even lower this year....

I had the same problem with my GSP, I used two balms, one was SWAT pink stuff the vet told me about. SWAT will keep the flies away. The other I used was bag balm, which is basically udder balm. Apply it two times a day until they heal. One cut would not heal so I super glued it shut....that worked.
