Re: Pigeons first flight

Well, it was such a nice evening, I decided to fly them today. It took quite a little while for them to build up the confidence to fly off. http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii40/Duckdog_01/puppy/2187CF22-D4A9-46CF-80EF-A6A8D490DD3E-64354-0000714EE304A759.jpg http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii40...

Re: Pigeons first flight

Hmmmmm. I don't think the other 4 are going to pair up. So, waiting on a clutch from them probably won't work.
Would it be advisable to maybe fly one at a time for a while?

Pigeons first flight

Ok guys, I think tomorrow is the big day. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks exactly that my homers have been in their loft here. They've never free flown from any other loft. I usually feed them in the evenings, but I'm thinking about not feeding them this evening so they'll be hungry when I fly them. Now,.....

Re: What kinds if pigeons to get started with?

This is my advice, but first I'd like to preface it by saying that I'm no professional. Just a dog guy. I wouldn't "train" a point if it's not there to begin with. Any dog can be trained to "stand" game, but, in my opinion, that's not a point. I think you and the dog both would be happier if you tra...

Re: Mulberries?

Thanks for the link. I wonder if there's a threshold for toxicity? Or, if they can have an adverse affect on absorption of protein or vitamins and minerals from their intended food. I'm not worried by any means, (but I think there might be something to the dietetic theory), Just thought it'd make fo...

Mulberries?

My young (10 week old) DD pup has really acquired a taste for the mulberries that fall from the tree. I've done an internet search, but I haven't really turned up much. So, other than "seedy" poop in the yard, are there really any inherent dangers? In other words, could he ever eat too many? I'm sta...

Re: Pigeon nests?

Looks good to me! I think I would utilize some of that wall up higher though. I am by no means a pigeon expert,...heck, I don't even know what I'm doing yet, but I do know they like to get as high as possible. A shelf, or some boxes mounted high on that wall is what I'd do. If you mounted a row of c...

Re: Pigeon nests?

Well, here's one for ya. :)
Will the mother ever mate with it's young? I do know the one bird with blue flecks has nested and raised two of my young birds. Does that eliminate my chances by at least 2 of having her nest again?

Pigeon nests?

This oughta be an easy question for ya'all that have pigeons. Do they build nests all the time or just when they're planning on laying eggs? I picked up half a dozen homers for my new loft (finally!) last weekend, and I've supplied ample pine needles and grass, but I haven't observed any nesting at ...

Re: Anyone use their bird dog for coyotes too?

I am by no means an expert, but...yes, it could be done. BUT, it would depend on the dog. You wouldn't want a dog that's just going to run out and fight coyotes. That could end badly. Sometimes they mix it up a bit, but the ultimate goal is to have the dog work (tease) the coyote closer. When there ...

Re: Pigeon Question

Looks pretty good to me, but I'd for sure get something on that OSB board you used for the roof. That stuff doesn't fare well in the elements for long. Even if you just tar papered it until you shingled (or whatever kind of roofing), that would suffice. Just staple the heck out of it so it doesn't b...

Another method of re-entry is called a Sputnik. Pigeon trap?

Hey guys,
Do any of ya'all have a good picture of a wild pigeon trap?
I know they're available for purchase, but I'm pretty sure I can make my own with stuff I've got lying around here.

Also, I've obviously never trapped pigeons,...so, any advice or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

Well...crap. :(
That IS bad news. That's the first I've heard of troubles mixing the two.
I was really hoping to keep a few quail in that bottom section for some variety if nothing else.

Thanks for the compliment though! :)

Hattrick, Do you have any resources that back that up? Not doubting your claim, but I would like to read up on it. Not sure if the floor question was for me or "in general"... I can't say for sure what's best, but I buried chicken wire in the quail section (ground floor), and used plywood for the up...

Re: Where to keep your birds for training?

I just recently put together a loft a lot like what you're describing. I started with 4x4's in the ground...then concreted them in. Then just built up off of that. I didn't really have any plans to work off, but I'm a carpenter, so designing on the fly happens a lot. ;) I made mine so I could house ...
