I have used Delmar's techniques on a bunch of Brittanys and parts of his methods on some rescues that I have taught to hunt. I believe that the year of "puppy time" depends on the dog and how soft it is or receptive to training. Know your dog. Some fold with a little pressure and some can take a lot...

Found lots in town..but they are hung on "no-can-do", rules and protocol fifedoms..some veeery important people there.
To train afield on wild birds is dicey..never know what will happen. Also regs are restrictive..see SD Game fish Parks rules online.

FF is best. Be sure that the dog has ALL of the obedience yard work down pat before using FF. You should not try to PULL a bird from a dog. Reach back and take a pinch of the flank and lift. Push the bird into the mouth instead of pulling.
