There are very few gun dog trainers who consider click and treat a valid training method. Far fewer even consider positive only methods. The answer to your question is pretty simple. The owner makes the final call, and if the level of training their dog has attained is acceptable to them, little mor...

Its time to restock the Johnny house. I plan to pick up some bobs this weekend from my supplier. I'll probably have them used up by the end of May. I would give the dog some quality time with the command lead before starting the e-collar. Rick Smith has a seminar in Minnesota in June. If you intend to follow knines advice, this seminar would be time and money well spent. Perfect timing for you and your dog.

I would eliminate the gun problem first, by putting away the gun. Begin training anew by stopping the retrieving games and follow a program that puts building prey drive with live birds a priority.

What size was his last ESS? Typical field bred springers I've owned or seen, (particularly those with British blood) are in the 30-35 lb range for females and 40-45 lbs for males. Not all that big of a dog really. Well bred ESS's are pretty difficult to beat for the type of hunting you described. Nate
