Re: Alpha 300
I used to only use stimulation but have since added conditioning the dogs to recall on vibration. I do this so that the dog interprets it as a cue instead of a correction. I find being able to recall the dogs with the vibrate function is extremely useful when you're in thick cover and aren't sure wh...

Small munsterlanders are natural trackers. Mine runs head down the majority of the time looking for ground scent.

I'm in Southern Ontario. Don't have to worry about lynx or wolves but I have tons of coyotes and bears around - the coyotes come right into my backyard fairly regularly. They're generally not an issue when out running through the woods although this time of year the coyotes are a little more bold wi...

Common sense says I would need to do yard/field work with quail to make him put it together that same rules apply on quail as pigeons. I'd say the opposite. Maybe wild quail but not planted ones. Re: Do you always stay with the same breed?
I've never owned any breed of dog twice but I'm relatively new to bird dogs. My cocker is 10 now and he was my first. I also now have a SM pup. I chose her because I like how her mother hunts (I hunt over her quite a bit) and from my limited experience around a couple SMs they had an off switch that...

You SHOULD be applying pressure and helping the dog physically move forward to the dowel every time. You want to get enough reps in that she starts diving forward for the dowel trying to beat the pressure. Sounds like you have not done that and are asking her to take it

I'd be leery of that. It takes 2-4 weeks for a dog to settle in at a trainer's. Standard time is minimum 3 months. Just remember if you go to an orthodontist... They're gonna sell you braces.

4 months is young to be sending to a trainer. She'll learn more hanging out around the house with you. Bird intro isn't time sensitive. If it has the genetics, it'll take to birds. You would get a lot more out of your money by waiting till the pup is older.

Just open her mouth and take it. Make sure she's dragging a line so she can't take off. You can fix the not giving it back when you start hold training.

Introducing a dog to gun fire at a gun range is a fantastic method for creating a gun shy dog. Just because it's convenient doesn't mean it's a good idea. I'm sure lots of people will chime in with " I did it with my dog and he's great" but that is not a risk I would take on a dog you want to hunt w...

Force fetch is part of the answer but a lack of enthusiasm a lot of times is due to too much retrieving. Lots of people get a gun dog and are excited about its natural tendency to retrieve so they are always throwing stuff for the dog. You need to build excitement around it. Wind the dog up and only...

Initially you need to teach him to reach. As your apply pressure to the ear simultaneously pull his head forward as he's opening his mouth to meet the bumper. While retrieving has a strong genetic proponent, it has just as strong of a nurturing factor. All my dogs have a strong desire to retrieve because I shape it from a young pup. I'd wait and do it after the season. You do not want to send mixed messages about what your expectations are. All retrieving must be done in a controlled manner. However there are things you can do to improve your current situation. Treat the dog like a puppy and start play retrieving with him at ho...

The obvious answer is force fetch. If you're not interested in that or not ready yet there's 2 other options. Only use bumpers that are the same. As a pigeon fancier I'll tell you that you have it backwards. You're more likely to make your pigeons sick or kill them. No way I would put pigeons in with game birds especially quail. There's not much dirtier than a quail.
