99% of the time hunting in MIchigan you never even see the dog. In a true hunting situation I could care less where his head or tail is. I just want to walk over the next hill in the direction the Garmin tells me and see him rock solid pointing a bird. This to me is the primary difference between a...

Re: Retrieving Stakes in Pointing Dog Trials
With that kind of reasoning, we would never know if a dog is a natural pointer or not...or if a dog could hold wild birds....or if a trainer put birds in the hedgerow 500 yds away to train a dog to reach. I'm stretching the point, but your reasoning sounds stretched...if we have to train it, how do...

Chukar this was a throw down trial you are correct in that assumption. I'm of the opinon Greg that you can't judge under assumptions. I don't think you can handle that way either. If I show up and my dog is standing like described above I would dismount and make a good flusing attempt. IMO a good judge would ride up with you and if he sees the bird in the open field wi...

100% genetics. If they don't have it, environment will not give it to them. Once they are born, 99% environment (everyone knows of "that dog" that is great despite the owner/trainer) This is not accurate at all. Even if a dog is gifted genetically if he's not developed right he won't turn out right...
