Re: launcher question
I have been very unsatisified with the 2 DT's I bought. The beeper quit working within 1 month. They also both tend to stick and don't release right away or sometimes not at all. One of their reps told me this is a common problem. I would try something else. I have 2 B&B types that are over 20 y/o a...

Re: Retrieving Stakes in Pointing Dog Trials
I agree with most of what Ray and Neil have said except 1 caveat - I don't feel that the dogs run as big as they used too. I believe this is for several reasons. 1) we get more and more limited as to the size and availability of both training and trailing grounds so dogs HAVE to handle better. 2) To...

Re: National Championship
Most folks are of the general opinion that any dog has only a certain number of 3 hour heats in them - it is that telling on them physically. No one is there simply to run their dog into the ground just to prove the dog can do it - they are there to win, and if you aren't obviously beating the dogs...

Re: THE MEN BEHIND THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Actually I was talking about the owner that handled his own dogs to win the NC And the point remains it is not money holding us back. If a school teacher, a state employee, and small farmers can do it, so could any of us I have no knowledge of who the school teacher is, but both your farmer and sta...

Re: THE MEN BEHIND THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
I think this thread should have divided into owners and handlers. I don't think many of the professional handlers are getting "rich". However, as of Aug. 2012, the avg. household income in the US was $50,000, and if it costs in the neighborhood of $20,000 to campaign a dog on the AA circuit, it does...

Re: Retrieving Stakes in Pointing Dog Trials
I just want to throw this one out there... In all the years I have been running pointers, I have not had a single one that would not retrieve. Some were better than others and one kinda preferred to point dead, and would occasionally trap a wounded bird under its paws and wait for me, but every sin...

Redneck I no they dont shoot birds at FTs and im not trying to change that. I respect all the dog games for what they are. I just feel after a dog finds and points a bird with style it should finished with a powerfull retrieve, to me that is a complete birddog. I will be doing FTs this spring and f...

Re: Retrieving Stakes in Pointing Dog Trials
Reading all this makes me happy I have the opportunity to compete in coverdog trials where we can trial and hunt the same dogs on wild birds. Virtually every coverdog champion that I know of is a hunting dog. I'm saddened to hear that is not the case in other venues. Youve got to appreciate the wil...

Re: Retrieving Stakes in Pointing Dog Trials
It's senseless to argue the field trial dog vs hunting dog because if the owner is happy with his dog that is all that really matters. Don't agree. As sportsman, we have the privilege to go hunting...but we have the responsibility to take home what we shoot. Personally, I am tired of hunting in ND ...

I would say that a dog doesnt have to be a great bird dog to win a trial, but to be a great trial dog he'll have to be a great bird dog.Saddle wrote: I love field trialing and I love the sport but unfortunately a dog doesn't have to be a great bird dog to be a great field trial dog. Sad but true.

Re: Retrieving Stakes in Pointing Dog Trials
If field trials truly were developed to promote the "better dogs" from the hunting dog masses, the retrieve is the final part of the job. however, If the trails were developed as a game only with no intentions of promoting the dogs that demonstrate superior hunting skills, then I can understand no ...

Re: Retrieving Stakes in Pointing Dog Trials
I would much rather kill the first bird on course than do callbacks. But I have limited FT experience so take it for what it's worth. It would reflect the hunting situation alot more. We used to perform all retrieves on course - there was no bird field. It seemed to change about the time society be...

I would call jack a pretty good birddog as well. Not just all run. heck you've run against him. He's a hard dog to run down if you're chasing him in his own tracks. I think randy will dial him down enough to make a good showing. This is one of the reasons they're not running Sam (Three Ten to Yuma)...

Anyone on here interested in the National Championship ? If so, what dogs do you favor? Stallion is the hottest right now, but you can never count out In The Shadow. I think a dark horse could be Erin's Kentucky Gambler. You never know cuz the weather can play such a big role.

If you're only talking a couple of months, and it really is something you want to do yourself, give the dog the time off and finish her when you 're able. You'll spend a month reinforcing the trainers work under your whistle anyway.

Where it breaks down is when the courtesy is not returned - when I am told that because I run a dog in a trial I am...

Good judges use the best performances they see during that stake, rather than trying to keyhole the dogs into what are very unclear standards.

Re: Shooting Dog vs All Age
Field trials initially ran 2 stakes, AA and derby. SD was introduced to attract new trailers ie hunters. This is where the bias regarding AA dogs being the true trial dogs developed. This bias is why so many of today's AA dogs really aren't true AA, but they're handlers simply won't run SD because t...
