Re: Tragic Fire at Almost Heaven GSPS - Bruce Shaffer

Is it normal for a trainer who boards clients' dogs to not have insurance? That just seems strange, though I can understand why an insurance company might balk at something like that. I'm surprised there wasn't other insurance available - or maybe it was more a matter of cost than anything else. I ...

I was out looking for geese and duck two weekends ago in the Clifford area and we came across a pheasant rooster in a soy bean field. He just stood there staring at us from 10 feet away. It's like he knew it wasn't pheasant season yet - he wasn't afraid of us at all. That was the first pheasant I h...

Thanks folks. So do you think he'll stand when he's older and has more experience? He only did it once, right? After that big flush? Or are you saying that he's doing it all the time now? Even for one or two birds? If only once, I wouldn't worry about it. No need making a problem out of something u...

North Dakota dove opener a bust, but lots of fun!

Hi, all. 1 September was the dove season opener here in North Dakota. Took Remy (my ~1 year old Weimaraner) out to the field to see how he would do. It was my first hunting experience ever, so it was sort of a case of the blind leading the blind. The wifey came along, too, though she was content ju...

Yeah, that's a good call. I was thinking about some sort of cutter for taking care of snares if I run into them. I suppose they would work on barbed wire, too.

ptrthgr8, There are many dangers that face a hunting dog when you turn one loose. I would think that in most areas, traps are fairly low on the list of potential dangers. To address your comment on the level of skill in terms of sport, I will say you are completely off the mark. For what it's worth, There are as many ways to train dogs as there are people with dogs but I would stop playing hide and seek with that training dummy. I would not take chances with the gun, even if the dog isn't bothered by it. Make sure to complete the gun intro because gun shyness wouldn't be a good way to start the season. You want a positive association with the gun, and you run the risk of the dog becoming gun shy later on. The biggest thing is to make sure dog is properly introduced to gunfire, and shows no sensitivity to it. I don't know how you want the dog to be trained, but shoot only pointed birds, otherwise you will have a flusher. Have fun and i'm sure it will be good training for the dog. My boy has been expo...

Start looking now for a source of pigeons or quail for training. How does that work? Do you bascially have to keep a bird coop on your property? Not sure that would be feasible living in town like I do - and I don't think having the birds in the house would work out. (And leaving them outside would...

One of the most important things is letting the pup learn how to use its nose. Let it gain confidence in the field.. Let the pup run with a CC on it and let him find stuff on his own.
