Re: Heart worms
Kyleandcharlie, There is only one (mostly) full kill method of heartworm (hw) treatment avalible that will kill all of the worms in a short (2 months) period of time. Some vets will recommend a one injection process, but the latest research suggest one injection at day 0 followed by another injectio...

Re: Train myself or find a trainer
Chris, I chose to go with a professional trainer with my first pup and my goals are very simmilar to yours. When I was in college I messed up my lab with her training or lack of (should have bought better genetics looking back). So I was a little worried to do the same even though i think I got some...

Re: A question for breeders about false pregnancy?
Short answer: A flase pregnancy occurs after a normal ovulation, and will not affect the next ovulation. Long answer: Directly after a female goes outof estrus, a female goes into diestrus. During this time, a female has a spike in progesterone (the hormone of pregnancy), regardless if the female is...

Re: fleas
Last year Bayer came out with a new flea collar called Seresto for fleas and ticks. Living in the southeast, we have very heavy parasite burdens( got bit by a mosquito last week), and flea populations never seem to go away. With this new product, I have heard nothing but great things about them from...

Re: Right time to spay my Brittany
I think a common frustration some members experience with their veterinarian that I see on this forum is dealing with veterinarians that don't have experience with hunting dogs or any high performance dog. That is unfortunate, but what a lot of people are forced to work with. But at the same time, m...

Re: What should I be feeding my 3 month old Shorthair pup
Is this real life?!? Just feed your dog, who cares what you feed it as long as you feed it. I see lots of dogs in my veterinary practice that would love to eat Ol'Roy and they are fat and happy. I see hunting dogs that do great on Dog Chow. Just feed your dog whatever makes your heart happy, hire a ...

Re: Vet visit and diet.
I fall into that category of recent grads, but don't think it is quite fair to lump us all together, or challenge my ethics because I happen to sell dog food. Ill will be the first to admit I benefited from Hills in school but, I was also the first one my clinic to push for a shift away from Hills. ...

GSP Trainer
All, I need some help finding a new trainer. My current trainer injured himself and will not be able to continue training my gsp pup this fall. My goal in a trainer is some one that focuses a lot on verstile training and spends a great deal of time on waterfowl as she will be spending ~75% of her ti...

Re: Struvite Crystals
The reason you get conflicting answers is because it can be a one time issue or a recurring issue. Struvite stones are always the product of a UTI. Most of the time they occur in female dogs, likely from a shorter urethra that predisposes females to an ascending infection, but the cause of the UTI c...

Re: Diagnosing UTI at Emergency Vet with needle
Nothing to be worried about. It is my preferred way to collect urine. I do it at the same time as ultrasoumding the bladder to see how inflamed it is and look for stones. It also is the the preferred way to get a uncontaminated sample for a urine culture and senstivity test.

Re: Ideas for deer?
Cut any of the steak into pieces about the size of half of your palm. Wrap in half a slice of bacon ( I prefer thick bacon) and put two toothpicks through bacon and deer steak. Marinate in Dale's seasoning (http://www.dalesseasoning.com/) for a few hours and grill. You will never taste deer any bett...

Re: Oleander poisonus to dogs
Oleander is a fairly toxic plant. It interferes with the electrolyte balance within the heart muscles. I wouldn't recommend planting it where your dogs would be in constant contact with the plant.

Re: Tick Born Diseases Skyrocketing
Thanks for the Interesting article Doc E. I see a few problems with the report from idexx to indicate an increase in Ehrlichia prevalence . "The SNAP 4Dx Test was recently upgraded to include antibody detection for Ehrlichia ewingii, which is carried by Amblyomma americanum (lone star tick). This ad...
