Re: Red setter vs irish setter
It is my understanding the irish were crossed with american field english setters to make reds. Your right there are a few irish about but not many. The outcrossing was done decades ago and it was VERY limited in scope. it was done in the light of day, with full knowledge, and agreement with the FD...

Wow! Crazy story. Glad it worked out OK and nobody got hurt. A wild pig is a nasty character. One time many years ago when we were chukar hunting, our brittany "Franki" went on a point down in a small brushy draw. As my his husband went down to flush "the birds" I suddenly heard him blurt, "STAY . ....

I trim our brittany, Seven's, legs, feet, and tail. Last summer I saw three of his brothers and was really surprised to see how curly and long their coats were. As puppies, they all looked about the same. I'm thankful that Seven has a pretty short and smooth coat. With six dogs that need nail trims ...

Re: Red setter vs irish setter
I'm not sure about the one description of our FDSB registered Irish Setters - that we call Red Setters - being "barrel chested and stocky" and not as good looking as the big, long haired, show variety. But, that's probably why we have so many choices in hunting dogs. People still get to decide which...

Nice looking dog. Love the expressions on his face. I have a chocolate lab that has a similar look to him, but Sarge is not so calm in a duck blind. He whines - which is annoying. Good thing I'm a 99% of the time upland hunter!

Totally agree with previous posts. Right now there are three intact male dogs (lab, red setter, brittany) sleeping on our bed along with two spayed females (red setter and lab). In my experience, wild roosters are the smartest upland bird there is. Don't know if "smart" is the best description, but it's the word I use. Each week from opening day on, they get better at outmaneuvering us and the dogs. If they haven't run out the end of the field before you even get out of you...

We live in Washington. The way the initiatives were written would, at a glance, make people believe they were doing the responsible thing. I believe that many people don't read more than what's right out front. And then, of course, Washington is a liberal state.

Check cord - a long one. Many years ago I learned something significant from an obedience instructor. I asked her what she does when a puppy reaches that age when they know they can outrun us? Ruffed are the best tasting of all upland birds - IMO. The hardest to hit - at least here in the Northwest woods where most of our trees don't lose their leaves. When they flush, you have a mini-second to get a shot before they are GONE! Great pics!

I've always felt it was an obligation to the dog to get it out in the sage or wherever to let them run and find birds. If you are going to own a bird dog you owe it that. Why: Labs for hunting the thick nasty cover and Setters and a Brit for the bigger, open areas. And because they all are great house pets, family dogs, and great company 24/7.

A little more clarification please. Are you wanting your dog to stop (point or sit) when it smells the game? Then, on command, flush the game, and then sit/stop to the flush? Are you then wanting the dog to retrieve the game after you shoot it? What kind of dog do you have?

I've had similar mysterious egg incidents lately. You can try Benadryl. Better yet, the generic(way cheaper) version with the same active ingredient - Diphenhydramine. It doesn't make dogs sleepy like it does people. You can find the correct dosage online for dogs. Or, ask your vet.
