Re: North Dakota dove opener a bust, but lots of fun!
Just a tip, your may have better luck if get there at daylight. Doves typically feed early a.m., then roost all day and then feed again around 4pm. And yes, you must be camouflaged. Their vision is great. If you go scout early in the morning you will find their flyway and feeding pattern. They like ...

If possible, try to find someone that can weld and fabricate aluminum. Tell them the dimensions you want and the look. You would be way better off. Mine was made without a floor and it sits on the rubber mat in truck bed. All the welds are solid and if you happen to drop it, you can't hurt it. It's ...

Re: Best upland jacket
We use Dan's briar proof jackets and chaps. Also use Godwin's hunting jackets. You will not tear these jackets. They protect us from briars and the rain. They offer a light jacket and we normally layer beneath it. This is quality material at a good price. We have the worst briar patches you can imag...

Neil, I think your response is the most accurate. My buddy found that out about 20,000.00 later. He went from surrogaters, to six week old birds and then just dumping out mature bob whites. At times we could not find a bird on the farm or even hear any whistle. Bob whites are just what you say, if t...

Me and my brother are just hunting old cutovers. We also made a trip to sherburne and Indian bayou with some success. There are a lot of people hunting those reserves. I did not realize that many people had bird dogs.

Thanks for responding, I also use the sd 2525 collar with no problems. I just think their beepers are weak. Pisses me off when you pay someone 80$ a piece and they don't even make one hunting season.

Has anyone had problems with the DSL 400 beeper collars. I have two new ones and both are giving me problems. They have not made one hunting season. One is hung in point mode all the time and the other has a low muffled tone when beeping. I have taken the batteries out, tried resetting them, let the...

Woodcock season opened today in Louisiana. Hunted from 630am to 11am and nothing. Tried in three types of terrain which included hardwood bottoms along the creek(lots of wood ducks!!) thickets, and short pine cutover with yellow grass. There just were no woodcock to be found. Waiting on more cold fr...

I wish I could help you but we are way down in Louisiana and it's hot as you know what! We try and start around 6am and get a couple of hours in with our dogs. It's just tough down here. We usually set four to five pigeons for launching and let the dogs cool off in the pond afterwards. We are consta...

Put an old shoe or shirt in the kennel with him. Something with your smell on it. Also if possible, during the day put him out on a stake with a cable. Great if someone is at home for intermittent supervision.

I call all of them the "VIDEO GAME GENERATION KIDS"! 80% OF THEM DO NOT WANT TO HUNT OR FISH AND COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THE OUTDOORS. They either have their phones stuck to their face or ear until they worry about who is going to fill their gas tanks again. I also found out that your are "DAD" until ...

Re: live bird training
I would do some yard work with the dog first. Try the wing or rag on the end of a pole and just keep popping it away from him as the dog tries to catch it. After a few times, the dog should start holding point, knowing he can't get the wing or rag. Once this is established, then bring him to the fie...

Re: pup not using her nose
Take one pigeon and put it in a small wire cage. Get your pup on a 20ft check cord and let it go towards the caged bird and if the interest is there hold her back about five foot. If she wants it, pick up the pup and put her back in the pen. Just start by giving her a taste of it again. Just reintro...

Re: Help me make a bird field
I would let the grass grow natural and cut a couple of strips with a bush hog. That way you can have two clean lanes with grass for cover. It's so much easier with the lanes for dog work. You have the cover to plant your birds and the lanes for you and the to go in and out of. You should have some f...

Re: What to do with new puppy?
You should be fine with the puppy run. Just take him on a run in the evenings when you get home. This is the beginning of the "control" aspect as you dictate when he comes out. I find it so funny when someone purchases a new pup or dog and they let it control their whole daily routine. Just remember...

Do not do this. Think of 2 things-who will whelp this litter and will it tie up your female during hunting season? I would not agree to breed my jip unless it's under my conditions.
