Re: Could a German shorthaired pointer make it to Ames?

Could a GSP make it to Ames...Well, yes. But if your goal is to run AA stakes with the hopes of winning at Ames why wouldn't you start with the breed that has been bred and developed to run 3 hr HB stakes to begin with? It's like shooting a round of sporting clays with a .22.... yes it could be don...

Re: Weight restrictions

Why not one of each? I've got a leggy EP that loves to run big and handles the heat very well, weighing in at about 50 lbs. I've also got a little boykin spaniel that you'd swear is attached to a rocket when she is in the field (I keep her clipped most of the year). They are very different dogs, but...

Re: Does your State require a plug for upland

In Texas you get 3 shots for migratory...no limit for upland

I've seen entire coveys decimated by groups of hunters....I don't care what you're shooting or how many shells you've got, this is unsportsmanlike and it makes me sick to even think about it.

 Great for a laugh --- My pup has ventured off on a few hunts of her own. Saturday she pointed some birds, I missed on the rise (of course) and she was off chasing birds until it was time to go home. Note to self -- When working a dog that was bred to run horseback trials, make sure you've got...

Re: Late Bloomers

People today don't use the same approach as back in the day. Dogs had a limited time to prove themselves. They made it or they didn't. No one gave away a problem dog. It was just the way it was done. No questions asked. If you didn't see the dog anymore you pretty much knew it didn't make the cut, ...

For me, as for many dog owners, training, hunting and possibly trialing dogs is for fun -- Not everyone takes the revolving door approach to dog ownership.

So because I'm looking for that once in a lifetime dog and hes hard to find then I should just settle for the kind of dogs you guys run? No thanks. To Whoa or Not to Whoa, That is the ?

I've recently acquired my first pointing dog -- An EP female that is now 11 months old (I picked her up when she was about 3 months old). I have never owned or trained a pointing dog, but have trained a couple of labs and Boykins. Since I picked up my pup I have devoured as much literature as possib...

Any of you guys going to have any EP litters in the future? I currently own two GSP's but am thinking about getting an EP. Would like one from parents who hunt our country. Call Dan at Phantomkennels.com out of Abiline -- He's got several upcoming litters. Many of his dogs are chasing wil birds acr...

This is a rough year for upland birds in Texas. Typically parts of the Panhandle, W. TX and S. TX have good wild bird populations, but this year I haven't heard any good reports.

Re: why a trooper saddle?

As someone else stated earlier, I don't like the raised saddles because you loose contact with the horse. When you've really got a horse tuned up it should cue off of your seat. I ride a rough-out suede polo saddle most of the time unless I'm working cattle or roping. I've primarily worked cattle an...

Re: Anyone having any luck in NM?

I hunt throughout the Permian Basin. This season has been brutal, not may birds and very small coveys. I've been chasing a few blues on the edge of town but haven't shot any birds; can't bring myself to it. Cy -- Glad to bump in to you on here, I'll shoot you a message on FB. My uncle hunts an EP/Brittany cross. The dog was free and is a great little hunter. You would never know he was 1/2 Brittany; looks like a full bred EP with a short white coat and black mask.

Re: Wild vs Pin Birds...Myth or Truth

I have a ten month old EP; she's been pointing pen raised bobs, pheasants and pigeons for ~ 5 months. I don't like to dizzy the birds when I put them out, just chunk them and keep moving. The birds seem to act a little wilder and at least have their wits about them when she points and I move in to f...

Re: EP vs. GSP why the difference in $?

I've owned and trained several retrievers and still have a nice female Boykin. Boykins are wonderful dogs, maybe one of the best in the dove field (I think a clipped boykin handles the 100 degree September heat better than a big lab), but the labs are going to beat a boykin 9/10 when it comes to ov...

I'm a newb to the sport but wanted to add my perspective. I rencently acquired my first pointing dog about 6 months ago. When I initially began looking for a dog I was totally clueless and open to any breed. When I got serious about looking I thought I would like a Vizsla, Setter or Brittany (primar...
