Re: Trouble finding training birds

Try trapping pigeons yourself. 2-4 traps in decent spots ran every 24 hours thru summer months nets me plenty of pigeons. Due to the way I train I insist on using fresh spooky pigeons and admittedly go to a bit of trouble to supply my needs. Ive looked at keeping homers. They just do not work for me...

Re: Training Methods

For my money, The Delmar Smith Method. First couple of dogs I trained were using Delmars book. On a chance encounter while living in Phoenix ran into Bill Gibbons and Bill West. Upshot of that, I spent 4 years around that method learning from them. West retired in that period. That period "spun" my...

Re: Training Methods

I use the old school West/Gibbons method. Walker did spend time with Bill West. West wrote the fwd for Walkers book. It is not uncommon for people who adopt the West method to spin an idea and it gains popularity. Mos launchers use is exactly that. A spin born out of necessity ( problems with carded...

I have a radio on in the kennels 24/7 ,it's tuned into 'Talk sport channel' I leave a radio on next to my pens. Have done it for years, it started when a fox was coming around late at night. FWIW, A pup that age I put them on quail in a recall house. I let them rip em out and chase til their tongue hangs out. I am introducing them to blank pistol and shotgun during this time. Firing blanks and then shot gun while they are chasing. What inevitably happens? They get tired of chasing and n...

That Lindley guy's style sounds appealing. Mos book is good. Heres a video from the "root" of Mos method. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amqSD1nxnHU&list=PLMDYt1fJDF8hwgz2Hxat81c8JxsD2WKEK&index=31&t=19sIts old, not greatest quality, and long, but if you watch carefully, it tells a lot. as an asid...

Reach around to her flank, that flap of skin in front of her hind leg. Lift up, she will open her mouth and turn her head, take your bird when she opens her mouth. Its an old Delmar Smith trick. It works.
A question to ask yourself. Why the change?

SE NM has decent numbers this year. Its spotty. Some areas are better than others. Plenty of public land in NM. I suggest you get a NM atlas (available at walmart for 25 bucks) and look for public land either state or BLM with stock tanks and hunt around them. Generally, theres a covey around a wate...

Pups will learn to hunt, to point, to be steady to flush and to shot without the owner ever shooting anything over them . I have never found complete steadiness particularly difficult to achieve because, I think, my dogs have had steadiness taught to them in separate little stages. These are stop/s...

I strongly suspect that some "lines" of some American gundog breeds are considerably "harder going" in the sense that they love to run above all else than are the great majority of British gundogs. I have seen pointing breeds and spaniels and retrievers run amok here though ….just about any keen hu...

I am reading "Training with Mo" now. I hear alot of folks recommend and use it and thought it was past due for me to get educated on his approach. Which as you say came from Gibbons/West. The correct order is West /Gibbons. I worked directly with both ( more Gibbons than West)for several years whil...

Ten grand for a well bred derby showing a lot of promise. The transaction was conducted on horseback. Including writing the check. Paper work to be shuffled later.

Reminds me of Shadow Oak Bo circling that covey and working them back towards the handler in the 2014 Championship. Even the handler wondered where Bo was going. :) Judge definitely liked it. First time she did it I wondered what was going on. I just pulled up my horse and watched. It was a down hi...

Actually, that can set the stage for what will likely be one of the most awesome and memorable pieces of dog birdwork that is possible to witness. Here's the scenario: Dog that has stood there and watched a bird, or covey run out from under its point. When released, the dog does not trail the birds...

Found out about a new take on non verbal whoa, over lay whoa to the closing of a gun, walk up close the gun and go for the flush You can also make a slight hissing noise as you walk around to flush. You should be able to find someone who can point you towards the Az Pointing Dog Club. Good club, used to do training days.
Long time ago they were the AZ hunting dog club.
You will find folks in that group to help you.

I have found a few covies with decent numbers of birds, but they are few, and far between. You really have to get out and wear out some leather to find them. I have only hunted the covies once and only shot about 1 or 2 birds out of them. The numbers last year were low, and are even lower this year...

I hunt mostly in southeast NM and with the dry weather we had this year the quail are not so plentiful this year.
