Thanks for fixing the picture. I was up in my tree stand, on my phone, must have goofed something up! Your Jack looks like he's full of fizz too! Show us your unconventional bird dog

We have two English Setters and a GWP and a Shorty Jack Russell Terrier. We bring the Terrier on grouse and woodcock hunts in NE Wisconsin, because we want him tired too, after hunting the others all day. He started to get the idea of the hunt, and would run over to the pointing dog at the sound of ...

Re: whitetail hunt

Excellent!! Our kids have hunted with us since the age of two weeks old. We'd switch off carrying either kid in the front carrier, or gun with the dog. Being able to make a bit of noise either with a grunt call for deer, or turkey call for turkeys, allows the kid to fidget with a purpose, and makes ...

We hunt NE Wi, and don't worry too much about bears while hunting. They are used to being chased by the hounds, so they must run off when our bird dogs come near. Plus, my wussy Setters and Wirehair would hopefully turn tail and run back to mama! :) After 30 years of hunting up there every weekend o...

We hunt NE Wisconsin's Tag Alder/Popple cover and used to use bells. They drove me nuts! Couldn't find the dog when on point, and I could still hear the clanging in my head while I was bow hunting in the afternoon. We now use beepers, and they are great! Re: ever had hunting success with a rescue?

Three years ago we adopted an English Setter from our local shelter. Surprisingly, the sheller staff was happy she was going to be able to hunt, and do what she was bred to do. She had a few 'issues', but overcame them quickly, aside from being a glutton for food, not aggressive, just a pig. She was...

My daughter uses a Montana Cincha Mohair girth. They aren't cheap, but he hasn't had a gall since. My Wirehair Ricki used to bring me possums. I'd let the dogs out at 5:30 in the morning, and she'd come running back in the house and drop a possum on my slippers in exchange for a dog cookie. You may also want to try a mohair girth, and make sure it is not too high up in his armpits, but balanced well on his belly with equal leather on each side of the billets(or leather the girth attaches to). If you leave the girth very loose the fat boy strap will keep it from sliding left , but it co...
