"Those traits are all fine and required, but until you have actually stepped foot on chukar terrain for a day you realize that the most important trait for a chukar dog are feet. The rocks will chew up the bad ones so fast that the heat tolerance, endurance and nose become useless." Agree 100% with ...

Re: Training a pointer to hunt difficult terrain
I hunt the same kind of areas and have found that a gps unit is a must have. I use the Garmin Alpha and wouldn't hunt without it. I hunt some bad areas also and with the alpha I can find her even in the thickest cover. As far as form go's that will come with lot's of exposer with wild birds. This ha...

Re: Jumpin in truck
I get the idea of injuries but... They will jump off things while hunting, over things, etc.I am not saying they can't get injured then also but you can't prevent everything. I just never gave it much thought other than having something on the tail gate like carpet (Tahoe) or a mounted rubber mat (...

Re: Garmin Alpha?
I have been using one in the field now for ten hunt days. No problems with the touch sreen or batterys. The batterys have at least 50% charge after hunting for eight hours.
Hunting with a younger dog and using both the tracking and e-collar has been a joy.

Re: Boots
The rocky steep cayons of eastern oregon eat most boots. Chasing chuckers in this country takes a tuff boot, danners don't hold up. Kenetrek's do!!
Kenetrek mountain extreme non insulated are great boots. Great support and last for years!!

The dog's out of sight for a while, 5 minutes, maybe 30 minutes, and they get nervous. Some get nervous when the dog is out of sight for 2 seconds. Are you c...
