Re: Underbite and overbite
Underbites are pretty common in American Field registered English Pointers. I have had several over the years with an underbite. I don't know of any issue that it ever caused. A minor underbite doesn't bother me any at all. I have seen some that are pretty ugly. Some very prominent producers in the ...

Re: fencing and wild birds
I agree with most of the posters here that you can probably get all of your training done on wild birds. I don't agree with the kenneling comments. I have three large dog pens, each is about 35 ft wide and 110 ft deep, about the size of a sub-division yard. I have a 5 ft tall horse fence around thes...

Re: Is Indiana a great bird-hunting state?
I live in Indiana, and I will try to answer your questions. 1. What are the prospects for new residents to have bird hunting opportunities? Not good at all for upland, much better for waterfowl. 2. Are there plenty of bird hunting clubs in Hoosier? There are several clubs and shooting preserves. 3. ...

Just keep them separated. Separate boxes when they are in the truck, stake outs should be separate anyway, hunt them one at a time.

My advice is to take your time, do some research, and do some networking. Contact some breeders and let them know what you are looking for. Spend some time visiting with breeders and see how their dogs work, and how they behave when not working. Go to some field trials and/or NAVHDA events and watch...

I am a small time pointer breeder. Usually one litter per year, sometimes two, sometimes none. For many years, I did not take deposits, I just put names on a list and called them when the time came. Typical shotgun range in the field is a maximum of 55 yards, for goodness sakes! I would want my dog to just expeditiously deliver my bird to my hand undamaged. I haven't read all the posts, so maybe this has already been said. You want to breed dogs that are capable of extreme things, to make sure ...

Go on the hunt and take your dog. Leave the dog in camp during the group hunt. At the end of the day when everyone is done, go back out with your dog alone and hunt for an hour or so. Next year the dog may be ready for the group hunt.

If you have a decent population of wild birds, I assume woodcocks, and it is legal, you should absolutely run your dog in those areas. The more wild birds that the dog can knock and chase, the better. The only negative that can come from this is if the dog just starts running wild, chasing deer, etc...

I realize that not everyone has the equipment/grounds to do this on, but I think the answer to a lot of the handling issues is to work them from horseback or from ATV and work them at a fast pace. "Tell us how she handled running birds?"
I honestly don't know how she did it. She did not circle them, at least not consistently. Somehow she knew exactly how close to get to them so that they would hold. She would often have to relocate a couple of times but she always got them pinned.

Re: Pheasants
For many years, I took an annual week long pheasant hunting trip. There are no wild pheasants where I live. After the first three or four trips, I came to the conclusion that pheasants were nearly impossible to hunt with a pointing dog, they run, they flush wild, etc... My mind was eventually change...

Are you putting bait only in the trap? If so, scatter bait all around the trap as well as inside. Wire the bobs up for a few days so they get used to going in and out. When you do catch one, give it some water and leave it in the trap. A pigeon in the trap gives others confidence to enter.
