[quoteI was one that thought an ecollar was not a very important tool untill I learned how to use it][/quote]
A barrel is just a training tool like an ecollar. I use a barrel and it works for me, but every one should do what works for them and what they are comfortabel with.

When the pup picks up the dummy and starts to return to you, walk in the opposite direction, maybe even jog a few steps. Make the pup chase you.

To teach whoa I would rather use a barrel. I set the barrel upright and I can control how steady it is with my legs. I would rather use a table for force fetch.

Find a professional trainer, or a serious amateur that has several dogs. Contact them and offer to help them work dogs. Do whatever they need in exchange for watching them work dogs.

I use an ecollar around the flank, but I also use a Buddy stick. I can use the stick to keep the dog from moving. This really helps the first few times on the ground and then I start using it less and less.

I have used self feeders off and on over the years and some dogs do great with them and some don't. I have noticed that often when a dog is first put on a self feeder he will gain weight right away but over time he will regulate what he eats and maintain a normal weight.
