Re: flushing dog pointing puppy
My buddies all run pointers (GSP and Weim's) and I have a flusher (Lab) The pointers point, and flush on command. My Lab flushes, and occasionally will point, or at least hold for the bird. If my lab comes up on a dog on point, she honors. This is self taught and I can take no credit for it. On comm...

Got my lab because I wanted a hunting dog, and had a few requirements. 1. Must be able to hunt upland and waterfowl 2. Easy to care for coat (meaning not long hair) 3. Must be able to live outside year round This put me with 2 basic options. A lab or a wirehair, and I prefer a flusher vs a pointer. ...

My hunting partners use that as well, and have noticed how easy it is for the dogs to put on weight when not being run as often.
I haven't noticed that with the Diamond Performance food as of yet, but I'm keeping my eye on the dogs come the end of season.

I've had no issue finding Diamond Performance anywhere I've gone, even though I always bring about double the amount I need.
A second would be Nutro High Performace, as that is what she was on before. Granted, Nutro is usually harder to come by.

What kind of helped with my lab was "teaching" her to dig. I took her somewhere she could dig easily (plowed field, or snowbank in the winter) and encouraged her to dig. She then associated the action with a command, and now does it on command, but not so much on her own. It's not foolproof, but it ...

Rawhides and bones to chew on when in the kennel to prevent boredom. Balls/dummies for retrieving training. Training toys are never chew toys and vice versa so they don't get confused.
