Re: Couple of dog questions for a new hunter.
As a novice myself.... The most importend will be to get the right dog for your need. You can train a Jack Russel to retrieve, but it is not in their make up. Make sure you go and look at the breeds history and what were they bred to do origenally. Pointers are great if you like them but could hate ...

Hunting dogs vs Bloodlines
We all chase bloodlines, breeding better dogs with dogs competing in trials being jugded by the best running against the best. Breeding the best with the best to be the best ! Yet so little of the litters bred come to trials or compete .... Somewhere one of the greatest dogs have been bred in histor...

Re: Pedigrees
In spite of what we are all led to believe and would like to believe every time you breed a litter half of the parents genetics are lost. So, there are very little of these dogs genetics left and why do we always assume the good genetics are left and the bad ones gone. Could go the other way. J I w...

Hello. I've been lurking around on this site for a while and decided to take the plunge sign up. I need to ask a question of you breeders out there. I have a deposit in on a GSP pup that will be available to take home in a couple weeks. I went out yesterday to make my selection (had first pick of f...

Re: Average size of a GSP at 6 months?
I am thinking my GSP is a little on the small side. About how much should a GSP weigh at 6 months? Not overly concerned just curious... He is on Diamond EA and has been for about 2 months but I am wondering if I need to feed him puppy food to stimulate more growth? They all grow between 6-12 months...

Re: What to do? Pup keeps catching songbirds!
Good news you have a little hunter here, young fast and having fun. Young dogs play/hunt and keep going untill success. I agree that once they mature and actually start working on real game birds and have learned that my master and his shotgun are my best friends, they normally only start digging,ca...

Re: 20 ga for training and field trials
For normal hunting a 20ga will do the same as a 12ga with less recoil, ideal for kids and ladies. Maybe a bit light for bigger waterfowl, and most trials they have gunners to make things safe and even. EP trials they make use of pips or a device that works with a 209 primer, that looks like the real...

Re: How to stop hardmouth ?
1st I want to say hard mouth and hard mouth, young dogs chewing a bird is not hard mouth, secondly when hunting big waterfowl one needs a dog with a bit of bite ....(choice) We may have opinions and choices ! I believe when playing games with a young dog, use a hard toy/dummy as this will teach your...

Re: Words of Wisdom
Lol. Ya for south Africa that seems like it would be the #1 command. For American field trials if your dog sits after the point, sits on a stop to flush, or while backing you will take everyone's breath away (in a bad way) . Although you won't have to pick up your dog you might as well. We can not ...

The Pedersoli, a dog called Bullet and the Pheasant
The air was fresh when we got out of the Nissan bakkie (pick-up truck) to lower the flap so that the German Shorthair Pointer by the name of Bullet could jump off the back of the bakkie. There were three GSP’s on the back of the bakkie. They are trained not to jump off unless commanded to. We have j...

Re: Words of Wisdom
It is not easy ! Basic training with a snack on a young dog is not to difficult, I figure in 7 months you got to win on the sit command at any distance. All you have to teach most hunting breeds is discipline and be able to stop them, the hunt they born with ! By spending 10–15min a day and not over...
