Re: Brittany isnt showing signs of pointing
My pointer chases the wing on a string - has since he was really young - never really locked up on the wing - not an issue to me - he locks up on birds w/o a problem and goes crazy when birds fly overhead - and especially now that the geese are migrating south and we seem to be in the flight path. O...

Building a dog trailer and....
need to know what the best color of paint would be to reflect as much heat away from the dogs? Obvious is white but not sure I want a complete white trailer going down the road - but might be the best option.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Need Technical help.
Right click the mouse on the desktop and select properties - from there select the appearance tab and change your pixel size. The smaller the numbers - say 800x800 (doing this from memory) = larger font size - the more numbers - 1480x1240 = teenager sized fonts.
Hope that helps.

Re: Beeper or no Beeper...That is the question?!
My friend has a beeper that you can turn on if needed - which is a great feature. To me I'd rather not hear and annoying beeper or bells, etc.. while I'm out hunting - which is just my opinion - I know there are others that have bells on their dogs - but sounds like a milk cow coming to feed and giv...

Re: What gun dog breed do you currently own and why?
English Pointer because I love the range they have, the energy they have, the stylish pointing they have - and I just find them an attractive dog - very lean and muscle bound - unlike me  Not knocking any breeds - just an EP fan. But a good bird dog no matter the breeding is fine by me as w...

Cody - try lithium batteries - I have them in my GPS and works great. Also - check to see how long your backlight is on - that will drain batteries quickly.

Re: What would your expections be?
Just because you can do something with one dog in four months doesen't mean you can do it with another. And of course what you get done with one dog in four months another dog may do in three. What does your dog do? How old is it? While I agree with what you are saying about the differences in dogs...

Re: What would your expections be?
I would assume that's close to 3 months worth of training (nevermind - saw the 4 month mentioned after I wrote this) - I would expect that dog to be about 90% broke and one heck of a bird finding machine. Assuming by your post you spent $1600 on training fees and your expectations weren't met. Did y...

Astro 220 vs 320
For those that have seen or used - is it worth spending the extra $ to pick up the 320? I've read the reviews - but want to know if anyone has had real world use of one.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: Pigeons?
I agree with those stating to arm you loft with homers. A few of my hunting/training buds have em and they are great - no need to worry about trapping them when bird work is needed. However, you will want to trap some sky rats to shoot when needed.

Re: Best way to teach a dog to go out
I purchased my pointer (female) from my friend and he said she wouldn't range out far - which was odd for a pointer. So...by dumb luck we planted birds pretty far away from her and then let her loose. We did this for a month or so and her range increased quite a bit. I don't know of a command that o...

dog work
Took zeke out today and did some easy work - let him run for a bit and then worked him on heel and come. I can say over the past week there has been some great improvement on his end. I had him on a leash and walked the exercise area a few times, then off the leash for heel and come, and he did fine...

Re: Training a big running pointer
I agree with DirtySteve, it seems that "pheasants" are always the measuring stick out here. I can promise you the country we hunt out here makes a 100 yard dog look small . He has the perfect breeding for what we hunt out here, keep your ditch parrots! I will take my chukars and big running dogs ev...

Re: Training a big running pointer
I will have to see if I can borrow a friend's ASTRO and let him run and see what happens. Hopefully I can get some pictures of him and I'll post them - hopefully I won't have to use my zoom lens to take his pic

Re: Training a big running pointer
Well...it is fair to say that this dog was not bred with bootlickin' in mind If your boots are a mile a way - then yes he'll lick em :) "bleep" good dog - fun to have around and tons of energy. Need to keep working him to turn with me - that's always the hard part with him - nose is big and he is b...

Wow - didn't realize with my post that it would ruffle the feathers of so many and things to get out of hand. Ask a simple question - get complicated, flame throwing responses - but anyhow: Whats the breeding on your pup if you dont nind me askin? Sire pedigree - http://www.perfectpedigrees.com/4gen...

Re: Training a big running pointer
I beg to differ on the wild phez not holding - been hunting behind big running dogs for quite some time and if the dogs is good - then the birds will hold. Doesn't matter if you're 300 yards or 30 yards - if the dog doesn't rush the birds, the birds will hold.

Re: Training a big running pointer
Good luck, and when you get sick of that big running crap, get you a nice foot hunting dog and start enjoying the hunt again. Never said I don't enjoy hunting behind him - just need to rein him in a bit. Nothing better than seeing my female sitting on a bird 300 yards away and knowing that she will s...

Re: Training a big running pointer
Ray - thank you for the pointers. I have heard about the dragging to slow them down - but you are right - doesn't correct behavior issues. I have had Zeke since a pup and he has been in my house ever since and with me wherever I go. My female is the perfect dog - she'll get out as far as I want to l...

Re: Training a big running pointer
He's pretty good at recall - I have an e collar on him, but like my female pointer - I only have to beep him to get his attention. And yes he wants to run big but I have to recall him and bring him back closer - I really don't want to buy a horse to keep up with him :) I don't have an astro to keep ...

Training a big running pointer
I've been working with my pointer on birds - but on a check cord and working him close - but not forcing it - but now it's time to let the boy loose. His breeding is for horseback hunting/trials - neither of which I want to do. But...my question is what should I expect from him? He does hold point -...
