Re: broken toe nail
nice... actually, I try to keep my dog's toenails as short as possible & I can say that has never happened to mine. I trim my dog's nails once a week, right down to where you can see the tip of the quick, but not to bleeding ( if possible) their nails should not touch the floor from a normal standin...

Re: Pup not getting the point
lol ok so basically just keep taking him out solo on "walks" and have him bust & chase to his heart's content until the light bulb finally goes on, and the yard work is retrieves? that's easy, since I can't shoot for lack of gun right now... when I lived "up North" we used to only shoot birds when t...

Re: Deer recovery
I use my Ava for tracking deer too & it is more fun than actual deer hunting! she has even found us a deer that had been out all night & half a day... surprised the coyotes didn't get it, but she tracked & pointed it... good job! funny though, when you said Dachs, I thought you were referring to a w...

Re: Food/Diarrhea Help
I used to have the same problem...Also, one of our dogs just loved visiting friends and relatives and eating all their dog food, but as soon as i would buy the 40# bag, she would turn her nose up at it, so I have been constantly switching her foods for the past 8 years. if I fed my dogs enough of a ...

Re: Pup not getting the point
usually when we go hunting & he bumps birds and we shoot, he's not getting any reinforcement for it.... I send my old reliable dog in to retrieve and the pup is way over yonder, in waist high grass, he can't even see... he thinks the bird is farther out, or is looking for another one...My apologies ...

Re: Pup not getting the point
ya I agree that if the pup learns it on his own it would be better off than him being taught to point.... problem is that the birds are in waist high cover & I haven't learned how to read him yet. My old dog makes it pretty obvious she's found a scent... she does this comical army crawl until she ge...

Re: Teeth and Gums
my vet recommends raw frozen turkey necks... they love 'em & it keeps them busy if I don't get a chance to take them out in a couple of days.

Re: Having problems with lead training
you have to make heeling more interesting for your dog... I had the same problem with my first dog Ava, I tried everything... half hitch around the waist, Halti head collars, tap her nose with a stick, stopping a million times, changing direction a million times, stopping and backing up a million ti...

Pup not getting the point
I have a pup that I had started on birds, when he was small he showed tons of promise pointing during training sessions...it seems that I goofed by letting him retrieve a freshly shot bird because now, he either thinks he can catch them or is having way too much fun busting and chasing them instead ...

Re: Barking in the Tahoe!
when I had brought my pup home, he was an incessant barker... I am staying at a relative's house and if they say he has to go, well you get the idea. anyway, in trying to break him of barking in the crate, I had to put a muzzle on him just to be able to tolerate the noise until he got used to being ...

Re: SPAZ at feeding time.
I agree, your calmest dog gets to eat first...and down the line. Does this happen only out in the kennel vs. in the house? Have you tried tiring him out before feeding? have you tried making him wait to retrieve or get a treat? in the past I have had luck with teaching my dogs that if they want some...

I feed mine Majestic/Nature's Advantage.. they're frozen patties consisting of ground organ meats and bone. Since I have switched to a raw diet from a "premium" dry food, I have noticed the following: better breath and teeth, more stamina, loss of tear stains, no more itchy licking feet, less sheddi...

Re: what if ?????
I have a dog like that too... she is a Large Munsterlander. I choose this breed because she was my first dog, and LM's are known for being very responsive to their handlers; eager to please and excelling after the shot. I didn't want a big-running setter, nor a stubborn shorthair. I wanted a pointer...
