Re: No wings on a string ...?
The amount of time you spend training a dog depends on the dog and your consistancy in training. I like to take mine out a couple times a week in the field. Many people take the dogs out more, but most actually do less. The more you can get out with the dog the better. But its not like this is somet...

I spend as much time as possible bird hunting with the dogs, some training, and a trial once or twice a years. But my wife and I play a lot of golf together, and both play pretty well. I highly recommend "Training with Mo" it is a much better method of training IMO than Wolters book.
A wing on a string is not substitute for birds. There is actually no substitute for birds.

Re: Are the remote bird launchers worth the extra $$ ??
A remote launcher allows you to train properly. If the dog moves on point, and a young dog will, you need to be able to get the bird in the air as soon as they move. That way you don't end up with a creeper. They soon learn that if they move the bird is going to fly. I have a couple of the LCS launc...

Do the gun exposure correctly first. Let him chase the bird and while he is in full chase mode at a distance fire a blank gun on something similar while he is at a distance and still chasing. Watch to see if he reacts (stops, looks around ....). If he reacts, stop shooting and let him chase some wit...

How old is your pup? Some of this can just be age and bird exposure.
If you have spooky wild birds to work the pup on you are lucky, there is nothing better for a pup to learn on.

They tend to get a bit more fired up on quail.
Because pen raised quail often do not fly real strong, you have a lot more risk of a bird being caught,
A cc is a good way to expose a dog that still chases to quail. Wild quail would be best, but if you don't have them around, its not much help.
