Re: First time training a lab retriever from scratch.
First of all, the dog is definitely off to a great start. However, blind retrieves are way down the road. My best advice is to get a good program and follow it. I use Evan Graham's Smartwork series. Very user friendly....detailed step by step...plenty of videos on line. Personally, I feel your dog i...

Re: Kennel run flooring
I love concrete. Slope it at about 1/4" per foot minimum and it will drain well and be easy to clean. Wood is horrible; it stinks. Nor do I care for gravel. It keeps the dog's feet in good condition but it stinks after a while from the urine filtering through it. For my money, there is no floor cle...

My last lab pup came out of Missouri (Buck Creek Kennels) close to Kansas City. Al Nelson is a great guy. Someone mentioned his son above (Greg Nelson). I personally think bobs would be the way to go...most commercial traps have bobs...I watched a guy once down at the levy in Davenport. He made a box the size of a suitcase...it was wire...he sat on a bench and had popcorn in the box. He had a stick to prop open the lid. He had 20 or so birds in the ...

This is really long, but I have no idea how to deal with a situation. I do guided pheasant hunts for a local club...been doing this 13 years. No one should be saying you are going too fast or too slow......all pups develop at a different rate (both physically and mentally) So, you really need to be the soul judge of where to go with your pup. I will say this from experience, though. You need to get with a proven program (such as Smartwork...

Re: Command to Hold Birds? Force Fetch?
If you don't force fetch, you will never have the "tools" to correct your dog for an error in retrieving (in your case dropping a bird). I look at it this way: in your case you can devote 4 to weeks of a thorough ff program to insure a lifetime of proper retrieves. Also, ff is way more than teaching...

I second Evan's advice. Work on "here" separately from any retrieving work. I've also had a few dogs like yours and something that I had success with was throwing a mark, then sitting in a chair. On the dog's return I would hold a bumper up high while sitting down. This seemed to break the dog's mom...

For retrievers, such as I have, it's when they have their adult teeth in and have completed basic obedience. I personally collar condition to "here", as well, before beginning ff. Generally, at 7-9 months is a general time frame.

Keep walking on the leash, but take your pup to new areas and let him explore to develop independence. There needs to be a balance of control and freedom. The e-collar for me is simply c...

Although Wolter's book has some sound principles, it is considered outdated by most trainers today. The big reason is Wolter's set up a time table for his training, and we now understand that every dog develops at varying degrees. Wolter's methods give you a sense that dog training is a race, and th...
