I use my 10ga with Winchester Supreme® Double-X® High Velocity Turkey in #5 shot. It has the best pattern in both barrels on my O/U. When I used my 870 both Winchester and Hevi Shot. Both patterned well.

Sounds like a great trip. Make sure the pup doesn't ride on your wife's lap on the way home. My wife did that with the last GSP pup and he has ended up being the world's largest lap dog at about 60 pounds!! Enjoy the trip. I see no problems with that. :D That is a dang long trip to pick up a puppy....

I am a 6'2 former police officer, and carrying around a 7 1/2 lb gun is not really an issue. With light field loads, or heavy target loads the recoil is non-existent, and follow up shots are quicker.
