Re: Westminster - Sporting Group
Will do! Every year he has a top winning weim, he really loves the breed. There are so many crazy show weims (not just happy crazy, like certifiable crazy) but Keith's are always sane and normal.

Re: Westminster - Sporting Group
Not a huge fan of dog shows but always tune in for the hound, sporting, and BIS of Westminster. I have to say being a fan of Weims, physically speaking, it was the best looking representative of that breed that I've seen at this show in years! Not saying he was perfect but better than what has been...

Re: Heat Source for puppies
We use the old Bob McKee whelping boxes and put a heating pad underneath a layer of white paper and a sherpa piece. The boxes sit 6'' off the ground on their stand, but if the mama keeps digging and uncovering the pad, we take the box off the stand and put the heating pad beneath the floor and the b...

Thanks everyone!! If you watched it on TV, you can see me in a black & gold suit kneeling down kissing Adam (our smooth) before the group when they panned across everyone waiting, and after the group you can see me helping with the photo. Eddie is on cloud nine! He has done so many interviews alread...

I know this is not gun dog related, but, this is a BIG deal in the show world :) Our smooth fox, Adam, won the terrier group at Westminster KC in NYC this past Tuesday! The links to his pictures can be found here http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/2011/results/group/terrier.html Sorry, just had to...

Re: Outcrossing Field & Bench bred
That was a theory from one of our older trainers that never made any sense to me either if you look where the muscles are attached. They have nothing to do with the tail. For a matter of fact mst all animals built for speed carry the tail low probably for balance. Plus I think people get confused o...

Re: Outcrossing Field & Bench bred
Intensity makes sense. I'm not contradicting you by any means, but how does high tail carriage indicate a more powerful rear assembly? A well muscled, well built dog, free of luxating patellas and hip dysplasia, doesn't necessarily have high tail carriage.

Re: Outcrossing Field & Bench bred
I'm not up on popular AKC English setters anymore, except for Rocketman, but I would think you could take a nice Ryman type coverdog bred female to an AKC stud, field test the product, go back to show with the second generation and make some progress if BAER didn't wipe you out. Slab sided, roman n...

Re: Outcrossing Field & Bench bred
I do not think it is possible to reconcile the situation in English and Irish setters. The culture clash between the ESAA/ISCA and the FDSB is too great. Oooooh I never said anything about reconciling :D I'm well aware of the rifts that go on! The majority of ES breeders I have met over the years a...

Outcrossing Field & Bench bred
How many of you have seen an outcross of field & bench? In some breeds (brits, gsps, gwps) the difference wouldn't be so apparent, but in other breeds where the look varies greatly between field and bench, what does the breeding produce? I know it will depend on the actual line and genetics, but how...

Re: Docking at Home
We dock tails with hemostats and then twisting the tip off. No blood, no mess, very little squeeking from puppy. I'm talking about our smooth fox pups, but docking is docking regardless of the breed. With one of our past litters, we had an issue with a couple of the pups having their tails "nursed o...

Re: First time taking my pup out (pics)
Thanks everyone! He retrieves a bumper pretty well. I'll have him sitting by my side, throw it a pretty good distance, then release him. He'll find it and bring it back to me, though a couple of times he took off with it wanting me to play catch, but I'm wise to his games and know better than to tak...

First time taking my pup out (pics)
Here's "Fletcher", my 8 month old english setter pup. These were taken a couple of days ago. It was the first time I had him in the field, as he has been in WA for the last 5 months living with my mom being socialized (she has a boutique/daycare/grooming/boarding facility) and taking trips with my f...

Re: Do your new pup owners register their pups ?
I walked away because the breeder didn't realize that the dog belonged to me once I bought it. If the breeder had told me upfront that they had or were going to register the dog before I picked it up, I might have gotten the dog. Bottom line, its my dog once I buy it, not the breeder's. The best wa...

Re: Co-Ownerships
I think part of the confusion is from the involvement of the OP with a breed that does not cross over much from the bench to the field. AKC English setters do not have strong dual breeders in AKC the way Britts and GWPs do. It just never occurred to me that field folks pour just as much money into ...

Re: Do your new pup owners register their pups ?
I have to agree, it is a bit arrogant to insist that the new owner use a name not of their liking. I allow every new owner to use my kennel name when naming a pup, but have never insisted. I walked away from a puppy purchase when the breeder had filled out the puppy's name for me and without asking...

Re: Co-Ownerships
Breeding purposes as well as AKC changing the rules on the BBE class. It used to be that you had to be the breeder and handler to show in the bred by class, but now you have to be breeder/owner/handler. And with many more clubs making special events with monetary prizes for the BBE, co-ownership is ...

Co-Ownerships
Something that Ezzy wrote on the thread about Pup Registration made me have a question for those of you field folk who have purchased dogs (basically all of you )
How often, or not, do buyers have a co-ownership with the breeder in the world of field dogs?

I find it so interesting that so many of you are against the breeder choosing the name or requiring that their kennel name be on the puppy. I understand where you're coming from, just never thought of it that way, as I grew up in the conformation world, and having the breeder name the dog and havin...

Re: Do your new pup owners register their pups ?
I should add that rarely do we sell puppies under the age of six months. We usually string them along until they're about 18 months or so. Mind you, these are show dogs, not field dogs. It's easy to get a good fox terrier puppy, most of them finish from the 6-9 class, but having that fantastic pup t...

Re: Do your new pup owners register their pups ?
All our puppies are registered before they are sold, and if for some chance not, we still do the paperwork then they transfer the dog into their name. If you individual register each pup in the litter, you have to supply a name for each pup. Are your new owners okay with the names you have picked f...

Silly ? About AKC Field Trials
I know this is going to sound completely silly to all of those who are experienced with AKC Field Trials, but I want to make sure I'm understanding this right. Okay, so say a GSP club is hosting a FT event. That means that any pointing breed can enter, yes? And when a Retriever club hosts, does that...

I have had English Setters for 9 nine years, but have never trained them to hunt, though all of them have come from dual purp...
