Re: Sexing Pigeons

Not an expert but some one taught me You can sex your pigeons by feeling the space between (forgive me but I dont know the technical name) cartilage around the egg drop shoot. It feels like a two pronged fork. Females have a wider space than males due to passing eggs. It is much easier to show you t...

Re: What is your favorite upland game bird to hunt?

birddogz...we do have ruffs in Alaska. Calling it good depends on the area and what you compare it to. Different areas of the state, just like most states will have better populations of the same bird. Where I live, I would call the ruff hunting medium. My comparison is to Montana and Vermont (when ...

Re: What is your favorite upland game bird to hunt?

I've always heard that you could kill Ptarmigan's with a sling shot. We sure save a lot of money on lead and powder that way and the dogs dont care how they die (stick, rock, or just throttle them with your bare hands) so long as they get to retrieve them. Plus you never bite into any l...

Re: What is your favorite upland game bird to hunt?

Well I am offended... not really...but where does the ptarmigan fall in the survey for folks? For me It is becoming my favorite, but that is largely due to where I live. They are found in beautiful wilderness country and the season is long which allows for a great variety of conditions and challenge...

Re: Rick Smith Seminars Feb 2011 Foundation and Intermediate

People always squirm over $350 for a 2 1/2 day seminar yet don't bat an eye at spending $600 for a pup, make mistakes trying to train it on their own then spend a thousand dollars sending it to a pro to fix the problems they created :? Reminds me of a friend who was a beginner golfer. He asked me h...

Re: Last day of the season pictures.

I am lucky to have really long season here in Alaska, in most areas I hunt it goes to the end of March and if snow conditions allow I have several more weekends. Maybe this should be a brag post ;-) Hope you wont consider it thread poaching. I set the Superbowl to be recorded and headed to the hills...

Re: NSTRA - How does it compare?

Brenda, I agree NSTRA is an extremely fun event. I also agree that it is good to have a dog with style and scores high on finds with consistency. In the region I ran NSTRA there were some darn good dogs, but you rarely saw them steady to wing and shot, and it was even more rare to find one steady to...

Re: Sage grouse

Hunted them in Montana...only thing I can say is know the habitat. Dogs will do their job. They are fun to hunt (what game bird isnt fun :-) ), not so great to eat. Beautiful birds.

Re: Recent Hunts

Ptarmigan are a dark breasted meat. I like them but not as much as the white meat of a Hungarian Partridge or Ruffed Grouse. Better than a Sharptail Grouse or Spruce Grouse.

I havent seen them before, but if I had I would still enjoy them. Hard to say that you've seen too much or too many memories such as these!

Re: A good year.

Looks like an adventuresome day in the field, nice mixed bag!....curious how do you work your GSP on waterfowl. Do you sit in a blind with her and decoy? Do you jump shoot with her as a non-slip retriever? Does she point ducks along the edges? All the above?

Re: A little about you...

51 year old male living and working in Alaska. Grew up hunting paaatridge in Vermont. Eventually, I landed in Montana and spent twelve years there. That is where I really learned the potential of dogs in the field. I had owned dogs and hunted them before but they were mostly companions who occasiona...

Re: NSTRA - How does it compare?

I havent run NSTRA since I moved to alaska six years agao, but I did run it for a few years. I do not remember any limits to the size of the field. I believe the rules only state a minimum of 25 acres. Many of our trials were close to maybe even more than 80 acres. For me it was like a mini hunting ...
