Re: I wish Idaho had a dove paradise like Yuma, AZ....

You wouldn't want to be in Yuma or the Imperial Valley right now! Yes there are a boat load of dove, but it's hotter than firecracker!

My first thought is 2 cups really isn't that much water. But, for peace of mind I would talk to your vet!

Re: Looking for good Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Breeder

My advise would be to take your time, do some research, and find a good breeder. A good start would be AWPGA. There's quite a few really good WPG breeders out there, and I'm sure there's some other that aren't so good.

Re: new griff pup

I would start your puppy in a crate right away. Your first couple of nights will be tough, hard on you and the puppy. You can't leave the pup in there to long, so you'll going to need to let him or her out in the middle of the night. Eventually he or she will learn to like the crate, it becomes thei...

Re: new griff pup

Congrats on your Griff! There's a fantastic booklet that Shannon Ford (Griffonpoint) put together called "Griffon Puppy Primer" which I would highly recommend. It's not a training book, but will give you a good idea of what to expect with a Griffon, and lots of do's and don'ts. You might ask your br...

Re: Garmin Alpha Question

I bought an Alpha a couple of weeks ago. I'm not an "expert", but I like it so far. It's fairly easy to use, and has several features like the proximity alerts that I really like. I'd give it two thumbs up!

I'll also jump in and recommend Larry at Aux Lake Kennel. He's trained multiple NAVHDA VCs and as High Voltage said he's a great guy.

Re: Back from NA testing... Disappointed...

Congrats on having a heck of a hunting dog. Just like the others are saying, the test is only one day in the life of Scout. The real tests are when you and Scout go hunting in the field, and the enjoyment and satisfaction that you get from hunting with Scout. As far as the water retrieving goes, jus...

Re: Snake Vaccines/avoidance training?

So Cal is like SW Arizona, lots of snakes. I talked to a Vet two weeks ago who has an office in San Diego County. She has already treated 5 dogs for snake bites this year. I'd recommend the vaccine AND snake avoidance training. I saw something in the last issue of Western Outdoor News that Web Parto...

This forum provides a lot of education for the novice dog trainers, and this post in particular is an excellent example. Thanks for sharing your experience, especially the videos, and please keep posted on your progress. And, that's a great looking dog!

Another option would be the Raney Ranch near Julian, California.

Re: sending a 1 year old for professional training

I'm also a first time bird dog owner who just dropped my 9 month old pup off with a professional. Our trainer likes to get pups at about 6 months, but the folks that I talked to said 9 months is the perfect time. I also share your concern about regressing from being housebroke after an extended stay...

Re: Who Is Your "Go To" Online/Mail Order Store?

1) Lion Country Supply
2) Gun Dog Supply

I think LCS's prices are a little lower, and they get their orders shipped out faster.

Re: wirehaired pointing griffon training

Start the puppy out right away with a crate. When it's young it will require lots trips outside. Remember that after eating, after sleeping, and after playing it will need to go outside. I've read someplace that Griffons take a little longer than other dogs to housebreak, but using the crate along w...

I enjoy his company, so he spends a lot of time inside the house. At night he sleeps in his crate.

Re: Exercise/ stimulation for bird dogs with limited space

Another option you may want to check out is your local schools. The school near me has a large fenced playground that's a great place to let the dog run and do some training. Of course I only go there on weekends and always pickup after my dog. With the Christmas break just around the corner, the pl...

Re: Pigeon help in South Carolina

I'm down in Arizona and am also having a difficult time in trapping pigeons. I have been using rye grass as bait in over-seeded lawns they're feeding in. I have seen pigeons feeding next to the trap, and I think they even bump and bang the trap. But, they just won't commit to the mother lode of seed...

Re: WireHaired Pointing Griffon Questions

I'm a new Griff owner, so I can only respond based on having a WPG for a little more than two months. I agree 100% that all dogs shed, but our Griff hardly sheds at all. Of course it's just a puppy, and the shedding could change as the dog ages and coat grows in length. House breaking has been fairl...

New from AZ

After many months of reading and educating myself on this website I decided it's probably time for me to join. I live in the great state of Arizona and have always hunted and fished as much as I possibly can. I recently retired and decided it was time to get another hunting dog. I previously owned l...
