Took a five gallon bucket and baught a Kobalt tool pouch that fit into a bucket. Holds multiple whistles, scent bottles, e-collars, transmitters, gloves, knives, tools, etc. and in the middle I keep multiple dummies, retrieve-R-trainer, .22 loads, collapsable dishes for water and food, bag of treats...

Re: How old for e-collar?
There is a lot of info posted before this reply...so much that I'm probably reiterating but what the heck. I'm not in the mood for reading much right now. What works for me is to make sure that the dog knows the basic commands (both in the home and afield) like the back of her/his paw. I then intro ...

My whistle preference is probably determined more by the weather and/or terrain than anything. If it's blowing hard, the louder the whistle. It's more for my ears than anything...the quietist the situation will allow (more or less).

Recently I heard some one say that a neoprene vest is actually detrimental to a dog w/ regards to maintaining heat in cold weather/water. The reasoning is that the dog's coat is unable to 'fluff' when they shake inhibiting their inherint ability to stay warm. To an extent that seems a little reasona...

Having a PP it's been a little bit of everything. A Drahthaar, German Wirehair, Griffon, a mut and all the way to "what kind of lab is that?" It's becoming quite comical. My brother-in-law spent weeks telling fellow workers that I'm hunting with a Laberdoodle. I rather enjoyed straightening him out ...

It's all about repeition, repetition, repetition,... Even you when you think the dog knows it like the back of his paw, continue with reduntancy. Establish the yard work, get an e-collar and do some research on avoidence training. For me it made for a very easy transition to the field. Once in the f...

How do most of you train in areas where you know there are snakes? Do most curtail training habits or just acccept that some of us live in areas populated w/ snakes and that these are the training conditions? Probably directed more toward the breeders since they run into litters far more than the rest of us but an obscure thought came to me on the drive home: Is there a breed more prone to deafness than others in our world of gundogs? Blindness?
Just curious what the experts "hear" have to type.

The dog needs antibiotics and a thorough cleaning. Call around to see if a vet is willing to work out some sort of arrangement, payment schedule or discount. If that doesn't work try the humane society. Bottom line is the doctors are doctors for a reason. They have access to the stuf that works.

Right on! I love my PP. She's nine months now. The kids sure miss those early days where they could man-handle in lieu of being man-handled.
She's an absolute pleasure to train. Makes me look like I know what I'm doing.
Congrats on a great looking dog.

I'm limited on space so I couldn't incorporate a true 'run' like I'd prefer. With that said, mine is 6x12 chainlink with 50/50 concrete pad and gravel for elimination. It''s wide enough that I built my training table in there as well. Custom made dog house that does a good job of keeping the dog war...

Have fun w/ the pup by turning it into a drinking game. Take a drink everytime he has to go do some business. Won't be long before you'll be urging him to go more often and soon enough he'll get tired of you and will hold it longer just to avoid the hassle.

Consider a pudelpointer. Very good reputation in all regards. They don't have short hair like a GSP but you can get one that is a shorter wire hair version. Huge bonus is they don't shed. My biased opinion is that you can't beat the PP. Upland machines, waterfowl machines and equally important is their easy going temperamant. Awesome family member. No. 1 Versatile Gundog for a reason. Got mine from Cedarwood in Boise, BTW. Can't recommend Bob Farris enough.

I would guess their tolerence isn't quite as good (not far off, however). PPs are actually pretty good in cold/cold water due to their body fat/oil chemistry (might be a bit much in extreme heat). That's why they are so good for waterfowl as well.
