Re: Best hunting dog?
You need to get to the area you are going to settle in and hunt with others for a while before settling on what kind of dog to hunt with. Form follows function. You got a point Greg. I need to "feel" what it's like to hunt with different dogs. My friend and I have set the hunt by next month. We'll ...

Re: Best hunting dog?
Hi Ryman Gun Dog, You are well informed about hunting dogs. I really admire you for that. Yes, I am serious. But I still haven't decided what breed to get. Thanks for giving me more thoughts to ponder on. I'll discuss these with my friend once I get back to US. My friend is also into bird hunting wi...

Re: Best hunting dog?
What kind of upland birds? What type of hunting ground, fields, prarie, ruff woods, Pine plantations? What kind of tempratures? How long will you hunt each day? Do you water fowl hunt? What type conditions? I really like labs but you have to think about the above. Big boned, dual coated, dense coat...

Re: What's your training schedule?
Same here SeniorCoot. My training schedules every Mondays are not always followed because of my GSD's mood swings. Sometimes he's active, sometimes, he's shy, sometimes he's lazy. I guess I need a new obedience trainer. Watchathink?

Hi all, thank you for your replies. That made me consider Labrador but still would check on the breeder first as suggested. I'm thinking of hunting upland birds.

Help with Pedigree
I created a profile for my GSD, Alex under http://www.perfectpedigrees.com/. But I don't know how to create a pedigree tree below his profile. Sorry, am just new to hunting and to this forum. I saw others' signatures are attached to perfectpedigree, so I created one too.

Re: Any one give their dog electrolytes?
Properly trained and conditioned sled dogs, maintained on high-quality diets, and not affected by vomiting or diarrhea DO NOT need electrolyte supplements. So, save the electrolyte solutions for yourself. Make sure your dogs have plenty of clean water, and spend the money you might have spent on ele...

Re: Dog nose problems, w/ Pictures
I suggest don't put anything when this happens again. Your dog may be allergic to the medicine you'll give him and might worsen his condition. Take him to the vet immediately, they know better than us. By the way, how's your dog? I hope he's fine now. My heart stopped when I saw this poor dog's nose.

The only problem is for him to stand still while I walk behind him and go out of his vision (any thoughts?) I have to do this kind of exercise for obedience- sit and down stays (3 and 5 mins) while I am out of sight. This is how we train...First, make sure the dog has a solid stay while you are in ...

Just wanted to share some small victories I've had with my boy the last few weeks because I'm just so excited about it. I got him in Nov as a 5 yr. old that was returned to the breeder. Got him for nothing so I figured, "What the heck, good breeder, good dog, go for it." Anyway, up until this summe...

Re: What's your training schedule?
I usually set obedience classes every Monday. That's the time where the kids are at school. My German Shepherd dog, Alex, could not concentrate when there are kids watching him. He's shy when there are other people. And with that, I'm afraid Alex could not join competitions.

Re: Places to Go in Kansas ?
I recently returned from a trip to Kansas to hunt in public hunting areas. The trip was great so I'll share you a bit about how to approach that hunt. First of all you need to see what the state wildlife department is saying about bird numbers and the comparison between each. That’s enough to get yo...

Re: What do you do with birds
Whenever we(my friends and our dogs) hunt, we make it sure that we bring a big cooler full of ice. After hunting, we place the birds in a vacuum sealed container and put them in the cooler. In that way, it would still be close to fresh when cooked.

How did you cook the birds after your lab got them? Did you freeze them after? Birds react to aging well if kept cool.Richie27 wrote:my lab flushed these birds...hmm tasty

Re: What dog food are you using currently?
I feed my GSD with 2 dog foods: Loyall Active Adult 26/19 and Sportmix energy plus 24/20. It's good to mix two kinds of the best dog foods that I've tried because the combination gives them more nutrients.
