Re: Coyote bite
If it looks like a scrape, he probably did it on the den. Clean it and put some triple antibiotic on it. Yep. Did that. Don't see any ripping, teeth marks, punctures...just a shallow layer of skin missing from the top of the nose. And I didn't hear the pup yelp. So probably not a bite. Don't know h...

Coyote bite
Was out running my EP pup (1 yr old) this afternoon and he started having way too much fun in the high grass 50 yards out. When I got to him I realized he'd found a coyote den and one of the babies which was a few yards outside the hole. Got my pup under control ...but not before he got a small bite...

Puppy's first point
This is my EP's first point at about four months old with the old wing on a string. He a little over ten months old now and away for a month of professional training. After having him for two weeks, the trainer says he has good prey instincts, a great temperament and, the words I really wanted to he...

Re: Basic puppy questions
I think a little more puppy proofing is definitely in order at home and I like the idea of sectioning off a room for the pup to be able to play safely in when I can't watch her every second. Right now she's in the kennel if I can't be watching her constantly. I do try to redirect her chewing when I...

Good book or video on quail hunting
Dropping my dog off Sunday for a month of training. I'm new to all this, so figure while he's getting trained, so should I. Does anyone have a recommendation on a good book/video to introduce a newbie upland bird hunter to the sport? Not something on training the dog, but on basics about hunting tec...

Finally time to send EP pup to training school
Got the call from the trainer today and I'll be dropping my nine-month-old EP off for a month of training this weekend. Then he'll go back for a couple day tune-up in the fall. Have spent all this time getting him ready...understands "here," "sit," "stay," "heel," shotgun acclimated, great prey inst...

Mine is seven months old now and the best companion dog I've ever had. House trained by 10 weeks. My wife wasn't big on it at first either, but now she's so attached to him she's not happy that I'm sending him away for training in a few months.

Thanks for the feedback, folks. Bottom line is that I need to keep better control of the training sessions...and fortunately my mistake hasn't done any major damage to a pup that is already a great companion and soon to be a fine hunter.

Ooops, Pointer pup ate dove
I've got a Pointer that's about 5 months old. Housetrained by 10 weeks. Has basic commands down (at least when he's not too distracted in the field). He's getting comfortable wearing boots in the field and showing no signs of being gunshy. Began with starter pistol, then 9mm handgun and, yesterday, ...

Okiedogguy, I know you guys are really interested in your dogs but at 9 weeks you need to be bonding with the pup not worried about birds, play training at this age goes a long way in the dogs developement. We've had him about four weeks now and he's been quick to adapt to life inside. He's already largely house trained (we don't trust him on carpet yet), sp...

cool looking little pup. what's he bred like? American Field registered. Comes from a long line of dogs successful in hunting and field trials. Thanks again for the info. It's all very helpful, which is what I would expect from the folks on this forum. Great feedback, folks! I knew when I found this forum that I would get some seasoned advice. As a newbie to this gun-dog thing I look forward to being an active member here and learning more.
Meanwhile, looks like its unanimous...when I pick up my Pointer pup in July, he's coming in the house.

The parents of the dog I'm getting are ourdoors-only dogs. They were both gentle, mellow, quiet and attentive when a stranger (me) dropped by to check out the litter.

English Pointers good house dogs, too?
I'm about to get a great English Pointer pup (male). I've done a lot of research, have a quality breeder and have hunted with these dogs numerous times with friends. So I'm ready to go...except I'm hearing mixed advice on whether they can be good house dogs. Most of my buddies swear they must be kee...
