negligence, probably. Intentional use of known malfunctioning equipment? I seriously doubt it. that would be stupid from both business and legal perspectives. Lets just hope this vet goes to school on this one. I'm sorry your pup had to be the unsuspecting teacher.

A surgical stapler is easier, less painful than suture, and usually adequate for most cuts. splint material (like SAM splint). Army field dressing (really big, absorbent bandage from Uncle Sam, available surplus) for really bad wounds. sheet cotton or cast padding to pad fracture/ bad cut so you can...

Brown wax could be yeast, which is easily tested for by your vet. Yeast infection is pretty much always a secondary problem, with either allergies or constant swimming underlying. If he's not itchy, probably not allergy. Make sure you flush ears at the end of each swimming day; my favorite is EpiOt...

elbel, if the wounds are spreading, then I'd say you are dealing with some sort of infection, possibly secondary to the theoretical pressure/thermal injury we speculated on. I use a radiosurgical knife, which cuts by high energy radio waves. There is the "scalpel", actually a wire, which acts as "tra...

just don't feed nothing but sugars/carbs, as this will make blood glucose go all over the place. Numerous, small high protein snacks during a hard day of hunting/trialing should keep em' running fine. I hunted as a kid with a guy who fed his Eng. Pointers raw beef lung that he got at a local butcher...

Re: strange wounds on my vizsla
elbel, my first knee jerk idea was the same as Munster's, a pressure or thermal wound from spaying. some vets use warming devices during surgery which is good, but sometimes they don't work right. The bilateral symmetry adds credence to this theory. Some vets also use radiosurgical knives to make in...

Shadow, you did well. I'll echo Dog Doc; the only difference if I'd treated in my office is the nice blue scrub top with my name embroidered on it, my sweet receptionist, and my pliers are stainless steel. Oh, yeah, and your wallet would have been lighter going out. guys, of this happens out hunting...

Re: Flea and Tick preventative
I have used Vectra 3D safely with all HW preventatives. Only one reaction so far, a mild skin reaction on a pup. Georgia Boy, I really have had a lot of serious systemic reactions with Promeris; if the dog gets the smallest amount in his mouth, they get anywhere from lethargic to pretty darn sick; h...

Re: Is 5 1/2 months old to early to nueter a dog?
I am a veterinarian of 31 years, and have neutered my share of dogs and cats, not to mention a few horses, pigs, and calves. I have changed my tune over the last 15 or so years and now question my clients' desire and reason for neutering, and push them to at least wait until the dog has matured full...

Re: looking for new guns
Thanks, guys. There's an Academy Sports in Athens, GA, about an hour and change from here. I think I'll go over there with Junior and try on some of their Yildiz guns, plus some others they might have. Mountaineer, I do intend to put the pups on some quail, as they are plentiful down here. Also plan...

I thought Revolution would be the bomb for just about all parasites, but was disappointed with it and sent back my unsold order just a couple months after getting it. Seemed to do well for HW, but not for fleas It would work for about 2 1/2 weeks on average, then kinda peter out. Also seemed a bit s...

Re: giardia and loose stools
Hondo. sorry, I've been sick with a GI bug (no, not Giardia!) I've had zero toxicity problems with Flagyl, used in otherwise healthy dogs. It is a narrow spectrum antibiotic, effective against several common GI bugs that can cause diarrhea, but generally not against the "good" bacteria. I have used ...

OK, time to help out the prodigal bird hunter! I just acquired 3 (yes, 3) Eng. Setter pups of good hunting stock and look forward to hunting quail and grouse. the grouse hunting will be in very tough, steep terrain (N. GA mountains), and I think the old 1100 12 ga. might be a little heavy and perhap...

Re: giardia and loose stools
I agree, some Giardia can be tough to clear up. I've had the most consistent success with metronidazole (Flagyl), at the higher dose of 50 mg/kg once daily for 5-7 days. there are some more exotic treatments out there for resistant strains. I'd also go with a bland diet for 2 weeks, and a good probi...

As long as it seems visual and anatomically normal, you should be fine. This is very common in some breeds, such as Siberian Husky.

Re: Flea and Tick preventative
I'm having pretty good luck with Vectra 3D. If ticks are really bad, add a Preventic collar (trim extra collar and put on pretty tight; oral ingestion =sick dog!). I've had BAD (and numerous) toxic reactions with Promeris; I'd avoid that product. Also heard good things about Comfortis, but it's $$ a...

Re: Dog nose problems, w/ Pictures
Dogs with light to no skin pigmentation on their nose are prone to nasal solar dermatitis, which is sun induced. Very common in Collies, but occurs in other breeds, too. If no response to current treatment, I'd opt for a biopsy to get a definitive diagnosis on it. If it is NSD, you'll have to color ...

I also carry an ASP extendable baton when walking/cycling. I usually carry the light weight aluminum one, but steel is available. cutleryshoppe.com has a good selection. One plus is that you can use as much force as needed; sometimes simply snapping it open is enough, while sometimes you have to tee...

Might want to mention the canine flu to your vet, that. or Bordetella (kennel cough). Rule of thumb: give HW prev. starting 1 month before earliest possible mosquito exposure, and continue until 2 months after. there have been some cases reported of Heartgard not being chewed, but swallowed whole, e...

djc1285, sounds like you have and epidemic on your hands! I'm a vet in GA, and I have treated numerous cases of heart worm. The treatment is 2 injections (usually) of an organic arsenical drug called Immiticide (made by Merial). It can be rough on the dog, depending on his overall condition. It kill...
