Re: Grouse questions
Grouse can be tricky for a pointing dog initially and it may take quite a bit of exposure for the dog to catch on. Let him run and bump the grouse. Do not shoot the birds that he bumps. After time and experience he will learn that he has to stop at first scent. Once the light bulb goes on, you will ...

Although I get the majority of my supplies from GDS, I always thought these kits looked like nice boxes. They come with the doors, vents, corners, etc. and you buy the plywood. I want to hone the labs retrieving skills and start on the ESS's flushing and pointing. I would suggest to concentrate on getting the ESS to flush rather than "teaching" it to point. Evan's programs are well respected. See if you can also hook up with a local training group. You can learn a lot wor...

I keep both of mine on the five second refresh. It is particularly convenient on my bigger running pointer and even with my closer working vizsla when hunting heavy cover. In open terrain, especially if your dog works close, it may not be necessary. The drawback to a faster refresh rate is shorter b...

Another choice for SM's in southern Wisconsin would be the Harmeyer's at Krystal Creek Kennels located in Cedar Grove in southern Sheboygan County. They are also a full time training facility and are very active in NAVHDA both as competitors and judges.

Shags, sorry,I meant to answer your question as well. 20 inches is essentially the width for both inside and outside. Because they are one piece, there is no "lip" around the outside of the kennel, so inside and outside dimensions are the same. The intermediate would be adequate for your 50+ pound s...

Re: Using an ecollar to deter chasing song birds
Nozzer, it's quite common for a young dog to chase the song birds. After time he will learn that he can't catch them and will eventually ignore them and spend his energy on game birds. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Keep training him with game birds and pigeons and he will get past it. You have...

I also would have to agree that field titles are important. Remember when looking at a pedigree, that CH is a show champion in AKC but a field champion in AF/...
