Re: Need help with choosing a dog!!
What is the deal with red fox labs and silver labs? What's next, albinos? There was a lady walking two "silver labs" by my house. Knowing what they were, and wanting to have some fun, I stopped her and told her that she had two beautiful weims. She became offended and told me that they were not weim...

Tri Colored Pointers
Let me start by saying that I am a vizsla guy. I have always had vizslas and will always have vizslas. However, my next addition will be a pointer, likely in the not too distant future. Recently I have seen a handfull of tri colored pointers. The ones that I have seen have had only a small bit of br...

Re: 28 Gauge O/U
Just last week I looked at the Stevens 28 ga over/under. It was selling new for $529. I was quite impressed with the feel. Obviously not a Citori, but can't expect it to be for the price. The owner of the shop said they have sold a good number of them in various gauges the last couple years and have...
Re: Spaying
I would also agree. I noticed no change in my spayed female's desire to hunt, drive, activity level, etc. I have no regrets in having had her spayed. Just don't ask when is the right time to have a female spayed!! Only problem we had was that her incision from the spaying came open and as luck would...

Birdman, I just noticed after I posted my reply that you're from northeast Wisconsin. I'm in Sheboygan. Perhaps we could hook up for some training. Send me a PM. I will do the same.

Re: Dog smarter than the handler???
Birdman, are you sure you aren't running my male vizsla? Sounds like a carbon copy. Here are a couple more suggestions. 1) If the sanctioning body (AKC, AF, etc.) allows your dog to wear two collars (and assuming you leave a flat collar on him at all times), just before your brace starts, put a seco...

Re: Keeping birds in yard with dog?
One of my pigeon coops is in the fenced in back yard where my dogs are let out several times per day. When I first put the coop there, the dogs were very interested and would stand near the coop and watch the birds. Within a couple of days the dogs ignored the pigeons and now the coop is just a norm...

2004 Dodge Ram 3/4 ton with Hemi motor. About 3 blocks per gallon. Other than the terrible gas mileage, I have been very pleased with the truck.

Re: Roading a Dog with a Pedal Bike
I purchased the K-9 Cruiser after researching a couple of different models. The Cruiser seemed to be the safest model and also had better reviews. I did not like roading on a bike at all due to the fact that I was very uneasy and felt unsteady. I tried it with one of my hunting dogs and my police K-...

Re: breaking your dogs
"But... the real reason I hunt over broke dogs is - I enjoy it more." Slistoe, I agree 100% with that statement. It is just plain awesome to just watch a broke dog. Now having said that, I hunt over one dog that is fully broke and one dog that is not. I don't enjoy hunting with one over the other, b...

Re: lab springer spanial mix
Jeff, even being a mixed breed, these pups may have some potential. If the pups parents come from good field bred lines and are good pheasant hunters themselves, the pups will have natural ability as well. If the parents have no hunting background in their pedigrees, I wouldn't even consider one of ...

It seems that Native has been advertising heavily and becoming more prominent in the world of bird dogs. I was wondering your thoughts on Native ...

Re: Family Time ....
I agree 100%. As much as I love the training, hunt tests, tournament hunts, and actual hunting, the time spent with the dogs as family companions is the best of all. I was also fortunate enough to be a K-9 handler for my job. It doesn't get better than taking a dog to work with you every day. If I c...

Re: ESPN no longer covering "outdoors".
Some of the shows on the other outdoor channels are not so special either. Gold panning, mountain biking and lift kit 4x4's aren't always fun to watch either. And although Tiffany is not hard to look at, if I hear "big ol' mature whitetail" or "awesome" one more time, I am going to get sick.

Re: Bird Dog/ Outdoor shows?
Your question asks what we would like to see in a bird dog show. A bird dog show would be much different from a bird hunting show. In a bird hunting show, I would expect it to focus on hunting various species of birds with an occasional segment on dogs. Now, a bird dog show should highlight all aspe...

Re: Anyone Traveling from Wisconsin to Texas?
Check with Caden's Kennels in Campbellsport, WI (Fond du Lac Co.) They leave for Texas every January for winter training and bring several dogs down. (I believe Comanche is the closest city.) Dennis usually leaves first and then Gary will leave a short time later. It is possible that Dennis has depa...

Re: young English Pointer-Problem?
A late reply, but I just saw the thread. Sammy, in your second post you say that the dog starts moving when you get within a few yards of him. Are you approaching him from behind where he is unable to see you? If so, try approaching him from the side where he is able to see you come in for the flush...

Re: how to intorduce the beeper to your dogs?!
Cover or plug the speaker so the volume isn't so loud. Turn the collar on and carry it with you during training sessions with birds rather than putting it on the dog right away. The dog will associate the beeper with something positive (birds). As the dog gets used to the beeper, you can remove the ...
