Just thought I would throw up a picture of our rescue "mutt" Lab/Chessie
He has work yet on the retrieving end, but as far as finding, and getting on the wounded birds I couldn't ask for more. He has turned in to a flushing machine.

Re: Something to mix in to put on a little weight?
I haven't seen a single thing that indicates in any way what the quality or taste of the dog food is good or bad. As anyone should know, every dog is different and some will eat anything anytime and others will eat when they are hungry. In this case, it sounds like the dog isn't a heavy feeder but ...

Re: Something to mix in to put on a little weight?
Like I said, he isn't really skinny. He just doesn't eat much, and I am looking for some ideas come hunting season. I would like him to have a little extra on him, especially when the later season rolls around. I don't want some fat "bleep" dog, but I will try gettin a pic up here soon. I know he is...

Re: Something to mix in to put on a little weight?
Apparently, it was supposed to be "so" good too. Looks like we might have to shop around for something different. Thing that sucks about it is I just picked up a bag.djswizz wrote:Sounds like the dog food sucks.

Re: Something to mix in to put on a little weight?
If when you start working him, he cannot keep weight on , I would be looking for a different food. Mine is sometimes picky and will stare at his food rather than eat it quickly....I started putting a little olive oil on his food and he gobbles it up, now he's spoiled tho but oh well ...he eats , ke...

Something to mix in to put on a little weight?
I have a CBR/Lab Cross that we adopted, and at 11mos. he is only 55 lbs, he isn't really skinny, just has a small frame on him, and with the hunting season coming up I am looking for something to add in with his current food to help keep/add some weight to him. We currently feed him Blue Buffalo, it...

Re: Which Crate?
That's exactly why the ruff tough kennels caught my eye. They aren't exactly flimsy. After getting to take a look at one in person, it really sold me on them.prairiefirepointers wrote:Those flimsy lightweight plastic kennels are handy, but they're not for me.

Which Crate?
Which crate do you guys use? I was at a waterfowl show, and I Forget the brand of kennel. BUt I have seen their videos, where the drop it out of a pickup with a sandbag, and it doesn't open, and drop weight on the top and it just dents...Looks indestructible. I would have picked one up at the show, ...

Re: What's your training schedule?
We have a cool spell here finally, last couple of weeks have been hot and humid, and he does not handle that weather well @ all. So I am planning on going out and working on some obedience and retrieving here in about an hour or so. Only live birds I have gotten him on so far were pigeons. He had a ...

Re: Retrieve bumper
I had the same problem with my Lab, but found out it was a teething issue. Has he been nuts about retrieving the bumper in the past? I don't know much about it, but F.F. might be the ticket.

Re: What's your training schedule?
I wish I could do a Morning and Night session. My working day starts pretty early, but I could try to get up a couple days...heck, I never have a problem draggin' myself out of bed at 4am to go hunting, why should training be any different ;) Would be a good way to get him a little more tired out be...
Re: Bag Limit
That's no way to measure the success of a hunt ;) I just like getting out. This will only be my 2nd year hunting though. First year with my own dog, and as somebody above said, I just look forward to getting him out, and figuring out what his purpose is in the field this year. 1 area I hunt in is pr...

What's your training schedule?
How many days a week, time per day? Do you go back to the basics often? I am working with my first dog, Obedience is the main focus for me right now, been fetching with him, and still have a few months before pheasant opener. I go to obedience class, and have a DVD that I will be using for the hunti...

Re: ever had hunting success with a rescue?
Moose was a rescue from an accident between 2 hunting dogs, from what we were told by the place we got him. He is 50/50 CBR/LAB. So far he seems pretty "bleep" smart, and I can't wait to get him on some birds this fall to see how it all goes. I was lucky and got him at about 9 1/2 weeks. The owner o...

Re: Dog doesn't want to retrieve...
Well, he is on to retrieving big time now. We are doing an obedience class, and the instructor was showing us his recall by throwing out a bumper for his dog. Moose wanted to run out and get it so bad, I have also been playing/working with him with a bumper and a deadfowl retriever, he's lovin it no...

I borrowed my friends last season and only had it stick once (below zero weather), got the first shot off, but couldn't follow up. Which sucked, but it didn't happen again. Other than that it was great.

Re: MN Public Hunting Areas
If you can get down to the Willmar area I have seen a bunch on the road early in the morning on drives to the in-laws. Have yet to hunt it, but I will be able to chime back in with some input after this next fall ;) And yes, be sure to knock on doors. Worst thing that can happen is them saying no, b...

Re: Dog doesn't want to retrieve...
Well, I took him outside on a tie-out, threw the pheasant wing 3 times and he bolted to it each time, apparently bumpers are boring him. I had to tug on the rope to get him to come back, but I will keep working at this...thanks for the tips guys.

Re: Dog doesn't want to retrieve...
He is a Lab/Chesapeake cross that I got from an accidental litter. That's a good idea about taking out another dog, because when he is around other dogs it seems like he wants to be in the spotlight. He's getting to that age where is tries to be defiant I think. I can't wait to start with the obedie...

Re: A little about you...
I am a 25 year old Welder who has been hunting since I was 12, and shooting bb guns and .22 long before that. I do a lot of whitetail hunting, just got into pheasant hunting this year thanks to a friend at work (I truly got addicted). I want to get back into waterfowl hunting, as it was a good thing...
