Re: New to horses
Horses don't want to work and generally want to be lazy, so if they run away from you, don't chase them by running behind them. You need to make them run, they will realize they are wasting energy by doing so. If you chase them its like a game and they will wait you out and they have won the game. I...

Re: New to horses
Not knowing how big the pasture is, if a horse turns and runs off, you make them work and make them run until they decide its not so much fun to work that hard. They are essentially lazy, so make them work, soon they will understand that its easier to not run and get caught. Just make them keep movi...

Re: Poison ivy from dog fur?
Yes its true. My husband is extremely allergic to it. We couldn't figure how it would get so bad so fast. He is a plumber and in a lot of ditches and when installing drain fields would get it from the exposed roots every once in a while. Then it started getting worse every year, we couldn't figure i...

Re: Cold Water Tail
Yep my griffon got it once too. No water involved either. He was just working a field full of pheasants and his tail was working like crazy as he was hunting. Noticed he was sore when we got done hunting and bumped into his tail and he cried, but he is kinda a big baby so wrote it off. Got home and ...

Re: Losing hair on tail in one spot
I would go and have a thyroid test. Our WPG started to loose hair just like that spot on her tail too. We treated with antibiotic cream and chemical shampoo and nothing helped. Finally checked the thyroid and that was it. We put her on one pill in the morning and a half at night, probably in less th...

Re: Seeking e-fence opinions
We have a SportDog system and we love it. Have had it installed for going on three years now, and we live in the country with probably about 3-4 acres fenced for them to run in. Took a couple days to install it. I personally wouldn't ever be without one after having this. We have had no escapes with...

Re: Not sure where to go from here? Opinions needed!
I can understand what you are describing to a tee. We are in the farm country too and in probably 20 years have not had an issue with the dogs expanding their range....until we kept a male pup. He buddy'd up with one of our females and they started out just in the field and would be back and check i...

Re: Invisible dog fence
We have the Sportdog fence and couldn't be happier with it. You can adjust the boundary of the fence and the sensitivity on the collar and we have maybe 3 acres fence and it hasn't let us down. We had a lightening strike take out the box and I called and they sent me a new one out immediately. Great...

Re: Red spots around her crotch (my dog)
My input is they are gnat bites. We have them bad this year, and that is exactly what they look like on our dogs. The only thing we have found that really works on them is plain old vanilla extract. We use it on us and the horses when we ride and it really helps. We tried repellants on the dogs, hor...

Re: Horse Question
Just remember they aren't like a vehicle that you can just let sit and then expect to jump in and go. They need to be ridden consistently to perform at athlete levels. You can't just jump on and take them to a field trial after they have not been conditioned for that much work. You also really need ...

I believe this is what he has is the limp tail, or cold water tail. He fits every symptom. I will get him on the anti-inflam. and hopefully he's not in as much pain as he is now. Thanks

Sore Butt
I have a 2.5 year old male griffon. Hunted on Sunday pm, but on Sunday night was having issues of not being able to lie down comfortably. In the night began panting and was not himself at all. On Monday morning he was still upset and panting and his tail is tucked to tightly that if you touch or mov...

Re: Underground Pet fences
We installed the Sport Dog system and have been really pleased with it. We have Griffons and they respect it very well. If they does for some reason cross it (once) he know he needs to come back in the system and it lets him. I really like that you can increase or decrease the boundary warning area....

Re: How many hours between stops?
When hauling horses there are so many variables that come into play. Some horses haul better than others, just put in some shavings, feed and hit the road and go. Others can really stress when being hauled and those are the ones you want to keep an eye on. They are constantly bracing themselves at e...
