Re: Flushing question
I have thought about this too, but what about the concern for those of us that don't have wild birds to hunt. Isn't there a concern that the dog will catch the bird? After all, isn't that what "get em", "pull", or any other command means, get the bird? The club I hunt has good flying birds, but the...

Re: Flushing question
No I don't have a release command, most of the time when she points and there is no bird I just ask her : where is it? And she goes back to search for birds. I tried this command when on point but she won't move. She doesn't know fetch. Thanks

Re: Beeper or no Beeper...That is the question?!
I had a bell for my gsp but she is a big runner and we hunt in dense cover so switched to a Tri-tonics beeper (found on ebay the older model for $30) after I had trouble locating her a couple of times and loosing birds. It is true that it is a bit obnoxious but I got used to it quickly and honestly ...

Hi, The other day I went hunting with my 2 1/2 year old GSP at my local WMA, we went into the swamp to look for some pheasant that would have taken cover. The hunt was a success as we got our limit. I brought her back to the car and put her in her kennel. I always check on her, eyes, ears, nose, paw...

I had the same problem with my GSP, I made her gunshy the first time I hunted pheasant, the guy I bought her from told me she was gun broke... but she wasn't. What I did is most of the rest of the season is that I took her with me on Wildlife Management area where they stock pheasant and got her exc...

Just wanted to put a quick note about SportDog Brand. I usually don't brag about brands but I thought I had to let you know how good they are. I had a problem with my SD-800, the receiver and transmitter don't work together anymore after more 2 years of operation, that being said I hunt every mornin...

I shoot a browning A-5 in 12 ga with screw in ckokes, many think this gun is heavy and bulky, but it fits me like a glove, and i could not make any improvments on the way it funtions, (flawless), so my point is if a gun feels great when you bring it up to the shooting possition, that is the gun for ...

Are the woodcock usually in good numbers in Massachusetts? I grew up in Ma and can remember it being pretty good woodcock hunting years ago. Don't know where you get there is no bag limit? They are a migratory bird with seasons and bag limits set by USFWS thru the same International treaty ( I believe) waterfowl are set by. Daily bag in Mass is 3 , possession limit 6. http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw/regulations/abstracts/migratory_bird_r...

Woodcock are my favorite bird to hunt with grouse. I am thrilled because here in Massachusetts for the first time in many years the season will be 15 days longer this year. My GSP who's 2 years old loves them and as other people posted, they are a great bird to train your dog on. I went out this mor...

Re: New e-collar
Put the e-collar on the dog for a month when you are taking him out on a walk or play outside with him. Don't turn it ON. After a month he will always associate the collar with fun time and you will be all set by starting to turn it on.

Hi all, I just came back form a trip in Quebec, where they were a lot of birds. But I have found my 2 year 1/2 female GSP is handling birds very differently. First of all she runs quite far, always in search of birds she has crazy stamina, which makes it hard sometimes to follow her but you can see ...

Hi, Duck season is now open in Massachusetts, went yesterday and had to leave my 17 months gsp in her kennel, and it kind of broke my heart to see her whimping and crying when I was reaching for my boots and getting my shotgun. Thanks for all your replies. She is ranging at about 300/400 yards but sometimes she can be close as well. I think what worries me is that I can't see her sometimes and don't know what she is doing, eg: if she bumped a bird or is chasing some sparrows, .... and can't have control over her to teach h...
