On November 7th the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of PA hosted its annual youth pheasant hunt at Central Penn Sporting Clays. It was a full day for 10 young hunters and their families. The day included a brief history of pheasants, the work of PF, our chapter work, hunting laws, hunting with dogs and s...

I hit a few different areas Wednesday morning and had the fields to myself. The dogs worked great with many points, a retrieve on a winged bird and another fine retrieve. Champ made both retrieves today and is doing great in his first year. We put up close to 15 pheasants but no woodcock that I hunt...

My first two dogs were taught to sit. My current pup has not been taught to sit and I don't see a difference at this point. I thought about this before and I always had a question about out it. If you have a way to get the pup out around mid day, I think a vizsla would do fine or any other type of pup. What time does somebody get home in the afternoon? Alright, so which breed is the fastest? I am going with Vizsla! When I did the flyaball with Nittany, he was a pretty fast dog. Re: How much food for a Vizsla puppy
When I have a pup I feed them twice a day- first thing in the AM and in the evening around 5 or 6. My current pup is almost 7 months old and he was looking underweight, so I upped the food to 1.5 cups at each feeding. That has been working out for him. I'm also feed the pro plan focus for puppies. Re: Training Vizsla pup, questions re: pedigree
If your pup is showing interest in birds then I think you and your trainer should make out OK. Shags gave you good advice on NAVHDA, AKC and a vizsla club. Where are you located? Where have you been running with your dog? If you can, get him out to fields, woods, streams and other places that you wo...

You can search for dogs hip ratings on offa.org. If it is a repeat breeding, check to see if any of the previous litters were ever rated. If the dogs ran in field trials you can look up the results on the field trial database. You can see some of the dogs a particular dog competed against. If possib...

As an owner of a few vizslas all I can say is do your homework. I did pass on a breeding this past winter because I had a little concern about the health of sire of the litter. Re: Brooding and Holding Pens
I've been keeping quail in a johnny house for the past few years and one thing I learned is to not use chicken wire. Raccoons can reach through and pull apart the quail. You would be better off using wire cloth so the local critters can't get it. I also agree with the roost suggestion.

Be careful with the chicken wire. The first JH I built I used the hardware cloth and everything went fine. They will need light and room to fly. If they can't fly then they won't do you any good to train with. With the JH I built (and the others) the quail fly up to a ledge at the bottom of the wire.
